Afghanistan visa options: Informed decision-making

A visa is more than just a piece of paper; it's your key to unlocking new experiences in corners of the world less traveled. Without a visa you may not be able to travel to or enter the country. As you consider Afghanistan, a country noted for its rugged landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and historical significance, being aware of the complexities of travel to this region is crucial.

Given the current advisories and unique circumstances of travel to Afghanistan, understanding the specific visa requirements and options becomes even more important. Let's explore these options thoughtfully and with your safety as our top priority.

Afghanistan Visa

Who is it for?

All travelers, regardless of their country of origin, need a visa to enter Afghanistan. After the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021, they instructed the diplomatic missions established by the previous government, the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, to keep operating.

The current Taliban government recognizes visas issued by these missions for entry into Afghanistan. However, while some of these missions have ceased issuing visas, others continue to do so.

Who cannot apply?

The exceptions to visa entry rules are individuals who were either born in Afghanistan, have Afghan-born parents, or whose parents were born in Afghanistan. However, always check with your nearest embassy your specific requirements to enter the country.

Purpose?

The Afghanistan eVisa allows visitors to enter Afghanistan for tourism or humanitarian reasons. There is currently no reliable information available on other types of visas, such as work or residence permits.

Duration of stay?

The visa conditions may vary based on your purpose of travel, nationality, and the mission you’ve applied to.

Embassy Registration

This is not a visa, but a simple registration to provide info about your whereabouts and travel plans in Afghanistan at the embassy or nearest operating mission on behalf of your home country.

Who is it for?

We recommend that all travelers to Afghanistan register themselves at their nearest embassy. This Embassy Registration makes sure that your country knows where you are and what your plans are in the country.

Purpose?

Afghanistan is currently not safe for visitors, and it’s recommended to let an official representative of your country know that you’re traveling to the country, for whatever reason, and ensure they can contact you in case of an emergency.

How to apply for an Afghanistan Visa

Even though information is scarce, we recommend the following steps to secure a visa for Afghanistan. Keep in mind that some embassies and consulates have stopped giving out visas or the visa issued may not be recognized upon arrival.

Step 1: Find the nearest Afghan Embassy or Consulate near you, that issues visas. You can usually find reliable information about this on your own government website too. Don’t trust unofficial sources that request payment beforehand.

Step 2: Follow the instructions by the embassy or consulate on how to apply and gather the correct documentation to apply.

Step 3: Pay the visa fees and wait for approval.

In addition, we recommend registering at your country’s embassy in Afghanistan to ensure your safety.
