Learn More: Schengen Visa

DOCUMENT OVERVIEW
The Schengen visa is a short stay visa required for nationalities who are not eligible for visa-free travel in the 26 member countries of the Schengen area. Holders of the Schengen visa are allowed to travel throughout the Schengen zone for up to 90 days within a 180 day period.

WHO CAN ENTER AUSTRIA WITH THE SCHENGEN VISA
If your nationality is not eligible for visa-free travel to the Schengen zone, you will need a Schengen visa to visit the countries in this area. Depending on your nationality, you may need a Schengen visa in order to transit through the international transit areas of airports of the Schengen States. See the FAQs below for full details.

OBTAIN THE AUSTRIA SCHENGEN VISA
To get your Schengen visa, you’ll need to fill out our online application and provide supporting documents including proof of travel medical insurance, proof of accommodation, proof of financial means of support during your stay, and a color passport-quality photo. In some cases you may need to supply fingerprints.

DISPLAY YOUR SCHENGEN VISA
Once your application is approved, you’ll receive your Schengen visa sticker by mail. The sticker should be affixed to your passport. You will need to display it to authorities before boarding and on arrival. Keep in mind that a Schengen visa does not guarantee entry, as it’s ultimately up to the authorities to determine whether you may enter the country.

Important Instructions

Austria is a beautiful country with a wealth of diverse leisure activities: you can ski in the Alps, listen to a classical music concert in Vienna, or visit old royal palaces such as the Salzburg Castle. And even though the Gruner See banned summer scuba-diving, we recommend you check it out nonetheless.

One thing that you should know is that while many nationalities can travel to Austria without a visa, you need to check whether or not you need one. It is entirely case-dependent: if you are an EU citizen, you'll only need your ID card to travel to Austria, although many other nationalities may need a passport as well.

To find out whether or not you need to apply for an Austria visa, we recommend that you use iVisa's free and easy Visa Checker Tool found in the top right corner of this page. We developed it so that you do not need to undertake extensive research to find out if you need a visa or not.

If the Visa Checker tells you that you do not need a visa, take your passport and bon voyage! If, however, you need a visa, you need to apply for a Schengen Visa, not an Austria visa.

The Schengen visa is a document that allows you to enter all countries that are a part of the Schengen Accord. You may need to apply at the embassy of the country you want to visit. If this is the case, you can obtain a Schengen Visa at the nearest embassy of Austria. There are a few rules, though, which can constitute exceptions as well.

For one thing, if you decide to visit multiple countries in the Schengen Area, you need to know which embassy to go to. According to the visa policy of the Schengen Area, you need to apply at the embassy of the country which is your primary destination. If that cannot be established, you can apply at the embassy of the country which you visit first. So for example, if you want to go to Austria but Germany is your main destination (first or longest stay), you are able to apply for your Schengen visa at the nearest embassy of Germany, which will allow entry into Austria as well.

As for other requirements, you need to contact the embassy of the issuing country. What we know is that you need a valid passport that holds at least another 6 months of validity from the date of intended arrival. As for the rest, you can check the embassy’s website or give them a call. An embassy will always be the most reliable source of information.

At the moment, we cannot facilitate your Schengen visa application process, but we do hope that the information above is useful to you. For any other information, you can call our support service 24/7.

Frequently Asked Questions

Austria is a Central European country with an incredibly varied landscape and a rich cultural history. It is a member of both the European Union and the Schengen Area. Visitors can see opulent palaces and cathedrals, rugged mountains, bustling cities, and lovely alpine towns. Lovers of history, culture, shopping, nature, and outdoor activities will delight in all the varied splendor that Austria has to offer. You can take a trip to Mirabell Palace, where the 1965 classic The Sound of Music was partially filmed. Meet friendly and interesting locals and enjoy exciting nightlife and world class restaurants in the capital city of Vienna. Visitors may need to obtain a visa to visit Austria and the rest of the Schengen Area.

Austria officially joined the Schengen Area in 1997, meaning its citizens enjoy border-free travel throughout all 26 member states of the Schengen Area. Visitors who are not from visa-exempt countries must obtain an Austria Schengen Visa in order to enter the country. This visa will allow you to stay in the area for a maximum of 90 days within a six month span. All of the eight countries bordering Austria are also Schengen Area members, meaning you will be able to visit them during your stay if you so wish, without encountering a border check: Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, Italy, Slovenia, Slovakia, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. You will need some documentation to apply for your Austria Schengen Visa, including two passport photos, a passport that remains valid for another three months after your planned departure date from Austria, your incoming and outgoing flight information, travel insurance covering at least 30,000 euros, proof of financial means, proof of accommodation, and a cover letter stating your reason for visiting. You will need to present both your valid passport and your Austria Schengen Visa to officials in order to enter the country. You can also apply for a specific visa to conduct business or attend school in Austria.

The official language spoken in Austria is German. However, English is taught in primary school, so most Austrians speak very good English. You should be able to get by quite easily in the cities and all tourist businesses with English. However, it’s always well appreciated if tourists learn some basic German phrases. The climate in Austria is both temperate and alpine. Summer is the best time to visit, with warm days and cool nights. If you’re a ski buff, Austria in winter is like one big playground. Only a third of the entire country is lower than 500 meters elevation. The temperatures are cold, often dropping below freezing. It’s a wonderland of winter activities.

Tourists can hardly take a trip to Austria without seeing the capital city of Vienna at least once. It is one of the most populated cities in the EU, housing just under 2 million people. Vienna represents a unique intersection of old and new. It was the workplace of many world famous composers like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johannes Brahms, Ludwig van Beethoven, Joseph Haydn, and Johann Strauss I and II. It is a historic hub of music, dance, and theater. It is also the birthplace of many modern ideas, philosophies, and inventions. To see some of the most amazing buildings in Vienna that were built in the mid-late 1800s, you can either walk, bike, or take the tram along the five kilometer Ringstrasse. Take in the Neo-Renaissance State Opera, the Parliament Building, City Hall, the New Baroque Burgtheater, the Vienna Stock Exchange, and the New Gothic Votive Church. Vienna is a very green city, with much of its area dedicated to parks, gardens, and green spaces. It also has over 800 bridges dotted throughout the city – that’s double the amount in Venice! And if you get thirsty, you can take a drink from one of the city’s many outdoor drinking fountains, fed by mountain spring water. Vienna is a foodie’s delight. The coffee houses all through the city are an important part of Viennese culture, offering a place to have your choice of coffee drink, a fresh pastry, and either socialize or read a newspaper. There are plenty to choose from, spanning traditional to modern architecture and some offering live music throughout the day. For mealtimes, you have your choice between world cuisine or traditional Austrian offerings. The city even has its own cuisine, which you can explore at some of the many Viennese restaurants. Vienna truly has something for everyone. Once you visit, you may find it difficult to carry on with the rest of your vacation!

If you manage to tear yourself away from Vienna, you will have the most breathtaking visit to the city of Salzburg, located along the German border. Featuring stunning architecture with a backdrop of snow-capped mountains, it is the epitome of picturesque. Explore the birthplace of Mozart, visiting the home he was born in, where he grew up, and a museum dedicated to his legacy. You can then move on to the Mirabell Palace and Gardens, a sweeping palace with beautifully kept Baroque gardens. A notable scene from The Sound of Music was shot here, and it’s easy to see why, with the timeless and breathtaking beauty of the grounds. You can also take a tour of Central Europe’s largest fully preserved castle, Hohensalzburg Fortress, which sits atop a hill overlooking the city. Salzburg hosts festivals and markets all year round. Winter is a wonderful time to visit, as you can attend traditional Christmas markets, take in the incredible Winterfest circus, and experience world class skiing in the nearby Snow Space Salzburg. And if you’re visiting with an Austria Schengen Visa, you might as well hop over the border to Germany and take in some of the beautiful southern German landscape.

Austria has something for everyone: breathtaking scenery, world class restaurants and shopping, incredible architecture, exciting cities, bustling nightlife, and quaint mountain towns. Don’t miss out on seeing this truly unique and spectacular country. With your Austria Schengen Visa in hand, you are set for the vacation of a lifetime.
