Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

IS BELGIUM ETIAS NEEDED FOR CITIZENS OF NICARAGUA?

All citizens traveling from Nicaragua need a travel authorization named the ETIAS. This is a European Travel Information and Authorization System, introduced with the agreement of the European Council and the European Parliament with the intention of improving the security and immigration issues in Belgium. To check your eligibility for Belgium ETIAS, visit the website and use the iVisa.com visa checker tool.

STATE THE ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS TO APPLY FOR ETIAS VISA WAIVER FOR NICARAGUA TRAVELERS?

In order to obtain an ETIAS visa waiver for applicants, it is essential to have:

  • Valid passport with 3 months validity beyond the intended stay. The information from each citizen's passport will be used to complete the application for the Belgium visa waiver for Nicaraguan citizens.
  • Credit or debit card to pay the fee through the online application system.
  • Active email address
  • Fill out the personal details, health and background check questions.
  • Mention the first Schengen country you will visit.

DOES THE ETIAS AUTHORIZATION GUARANTEE ENTRY INTO THE SCHENGEN TERRITORY?

Nicaraguan travelers need a print copy of the ETIAS visa waiver to take with them to the airport. They need to show the valid ETIAS authorization to the border officials upon arrival, together with the passport they used during the application. But, ETIAS authorization does not itself guarantee entry into the Schengen territory. The final decision is up to the European authorities. Border authorities may ask for further documents such as:

  • A return ticket as planned to leave the intended visited area.
  • Proof of onward travel.
  • Financial information to prove that the Nicaraguan traveler can support themselves during their stay in Belgium.
  • Health insurance coverage.

COULD NICARAGUANS WORK IN BELGIUM WITH ETIAS VISA WAIVER?

No. The ETIAS visa waiver is issued only for tourism, business, and transit purposes. It's not considered as a work permit within Schengen areas. Nicaraguans are required to apply for a work visa with their passport to work within Schengen territory. If a Nicaraguan traveler enters the Schengen area with an ETIAS visa and starts working, then their visa will be revoked and they may be denied from reapplying as they violated the conditions of the ETIAS authorization.

“SOME APPLICANTS OF NICARAGUA WILL HAVE TO ATTEND IN - PERSON INTERVIEWS”.IS THIS TRUE?

Yes. It is true that some of the applicants need to attend in-person interviews in order to fully process the ETIAS application. If there exist serious doubts regarding the information or documentation provided by the applicant, the ETIAS National Unit of the Member State responsible may invite to have an interview in his/her country of residence at its consulate. The applicant would be notified about the interview by email, within 72 hours of the applicant’s submission of additional information or documents. The interview will take place within ten days of the date of the application. The exceptional nature of interviews should lead to less than 0.1 % of applicants being invited to an interview by the commission.

CAN NICARAGUAN TRAVELERS APPLY FOR THE ETIAS VISA WAIVER FROM THEIR COUNTRY?

Yes, they can. The ETIAS application is an electronic form that can be applied for through an online process. The only matter to be considered is the importance of filling in the forms with accurate data as false information will result in denial of the travel authorization.

BENEFITS OF THE ETIAS TRAVEL AUTHORIZATION FOR NICARAGUAN TRAVELERS?

The ETIAS authorization will make traveling to Belgium less hassle and a much safer experience. It improves border management, helps to prevent irregular migration, reinforces the fight against crime and terrorism, helps to facilitate easier visa-free visits to Schengen countries, and also helps to reinforce the visa liberalization policy.

WHEN IS THE ETIAS EXPECTED TO BECOME MANDATORY? UNTIL THEN, IS A SCHENGEN VISA REQUIRED TO TRAVEL?

It is believed that the ETIAS will be operational in 2022 but it won’t be mandatory till 2023. Until then, Nicaraguans visiting Europe for tourism or business for short-term stays do not need to apply for any type of European visa, including the Schengen visa.
