Changes to Canada Visa eligibility for Mexicans

As of February 29, 2024, Mexican citizens are required to have a visa to enter Canada. This change comes after a period during which Mexican citizens could enter Canada with a Canada ETA(Electronic Travel Authorization) for short visits. However, due to a significant increase in asylum claims from Mexican citizens, the Canadian government has decided to reinstate visa requirements.

These changes aim to manage the flow of asylum seekers more effectively. Most successful visa applicants will receive a multiple-entry visa, which allows them to visit Canada as often as they wish for up to ten years, or until their passport expires, provided they meet specific criteria.

Read this government announcement for a full disclosure of the changes made and the new requirements. You can also apply for your new ETA with the Canadian Government.

Can Mexican citizens still apply for a Canada ETA?

Yes, Mexican citizens can still apply for a Canada ETA, but there are new criteria and conditions that they must meet due to the recent policy changes. Note the following changes:

  • With the new visa requirement in effect, most existing ETAs for Mexican passport holders have been canceled unless they hold a valid work or study permit.

  • Those with an eTA application in progress at the time of the change need to apply for a new eTA or a visitor visa, if eligible.

  • If they are no longer eligible for an eTA, they will need to apply for a visitor visa.

Eligibillity requirements to obtain the Canada ETA as a Mexican

  • Valid Mexican passport: You must use a valid Mexican passport for flying to Canada or transiting through a Canadian airport to another destination.

  • Purpose of visit: You are coming to Canada for a short visit, which is normally for stays of up to 6 months.

  • Previous visas: You must either have held a Canadian visitor visa (temporary resident visa) in the past 10 years or currently hold a valid United States nonimmigrant visa.

If you meet these requirements, you can easily apply with us now, otherwise, keep reading to find out how to apply for your Canada Visitor Visa.

What is a Canada Visa for the citizens of Mexico, and how can I apply for it?

The Canada Visitor Visa, officially known as a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), is a document issued by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows individuals from certain countries to enter Canada for temporary purposes such as tourism, visiting family or friends, or business trips.

  • Visitor visas can be for single entry or multiple entries. A single-entry visa allows you to come to Canada only once. After you leave Canada, except for traveling to the United States and Miquelon and St. Pierre, you will need a new visa to enter Canada again.

  • A multiple-entry visa allows visitors to come and go from Canada for six months at a time, without having to reapply each time. It can be valid for up to 10 years, or one month before your passport expires, whichever is earlier.

At iVisa, we only offer the multiple entry Canada Visa.
