Frequently Asked Questions

The tourism sector in Costa Rica has become one of the fastest-growing industries in the country. By 1995, it had become the largest source of international purchases in Costa Rica, even overtaking what the agricultural exports have brought in. Tourism has been, since 1999, a more lucrative source of foreign exchange than popular agricultural exports like pineapples, coffee, and bananas. The vast improvement in the tourism sector began in 1987, upping the number of visitors from 329,000 in 1988 to 1.03 million in 1999. The figures increased to more than 2 million tourists in 2008, with record numbers coming in at 2.66 million foreign tourists in 2015. 12.5% of the country’s gross domestic product in 2012 was directly attributed to its tourism industry, as well as the 11.7% of indirect and direct employment. By the year 2009, it was responsible for around 17% of foreign investment, with an average of 13% in the interval between 2000 and 2009. 2010 saw tourism bring in more than a fifth of the total foreign exchange produced by services and products exported, helping lower the poverty incidence by more than 3%. Experience the natural and cultural beauty of Costa Rica as you enter using a Health Declaration Form. It was in the late 1980s that Costa Rica became one of the most popular destinations for people who prefer nature tourism. Its primary advantage over its competitors is a well-established system of protected areas and national parks. The land area set aside for these tourist attractions is almost a quarter of the total land area of Costa Rica. The country is also home to one of the richest biodiversity index of any country in the world, with an area that is only around 0.03% of the world’s total land area containing more than 5% of its total biodiversity. It is one of the few nations with coastlines in both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, creating an incredible system of wonderful beaches, all within a short distance of popular cities that can be made as a base for visiting other areas. The more unusual attractions are the volcanoes that can be safely visited by just about anyone. Costa Rica became the poster child of eco-tourism in the early 1990s. Between 1986 and 1994, tourist arrival growth rates have averaged 14%, one of the highest figures during that period. Don’t miss the highlight of your vacation in Costa Rica. This includes bird-watching, observing the local flora and fauna, backpacking, and trekking. However, potential visitors are looking for more activities related to adventure tourism. The magazine Ethical Traveler included Costa Rica in its 2011 and 2012 list of The Developing World's 10 Best Ethical Destinations. Costa Rica is one of the countries located in the isthmus of Central America, with coastlines totaling 1,290 kilometers on both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. Costa Rica shares its borders with two countries, Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the southeast. Its highest point is at Cerro Chirripó, with an altitude of 3,819 meters, the fifth tallest in Central America. The tallest volcano recorded in the country is the Irazú Volcano, measured at 3,431 meters at its highest point. There are several islands within Costa Rica’s territory. The farthest from the continent is Cocos Island at a distance of 480 kilometers from Puntarenas. Calero Island is the largest with a land area of 151.6 square kilometers or 58.5 square miles. As stated earlier, almost 25% of the nation’s territory is composed of national parks and protected areas. These are under the administration of the National System of Conservation Areas or the SINAC. Get yourself a great view of the picturesque landscape and seascape by obtaining your Travel Health Card now. Biodiversity is easily Costa Rica’s eco-tourism trump card. It has one of the highest biodiversity densities in the world, with 5% of the world’s total biodiversity packed into a land area only around 0.03% of the world’s total. It is home to the indigenous red-eyed tree frog, one of the rarest frog species in the world. Most of the species of flora and fauna found in Costa Rica are those that flourish under tropical conditions, around 6% of the total known species in the world. The country is home to giant species of ficus trees which are habitats of trailing epiphytes themselves. There are also approximately 1,500 species of orchids found in Costa Rica. The fauna is impressive as well, with species of cats like the margay, a graceful feline with a long neck, and the jaguar, the largest cat in the Americas. Some may even get to see a black panther, a dark-colored variety of the same species as the normal jaguar. It is also home to some of the biggest species of parrots, the macaws and unusual birds like the toucan and the hornbill, as well as the smallest hummingbirds. Take a backpacking trip through the jungles of Costa Rica using your Medical Declaration Form to enter the country. You can never run out of things to do in Costa Rica, with the extraordinary natural wealth the country possesses. You can go to beaches on either coast, the Pacific or the Caribbean. If you prefer stronger waves for adventure, the Pacific coast is for you. If you prefer a laid-back environment, you can go to the Rastafarian paradise of the Caribbean coast. You can go sport fishing and maybe bring back an Atlantic sailfish or a tuna. You can also fish for marlin, dorado, snapper, or grouper. You can book multi-day fishing trips if you want. You can catch the surf in the Pacific coast, particularly in the Guanacaste and Central Pacific area. You can also dive with a SCUBA gear and look at the fishes instead of catching them. If you prefer freshwater adventures, rafting may be the thing for you, with more rivers per unit of land area than any country in the world. Book your holiday now, remember to have your travel documents at hand, and enjoy Costa Rica.

This is why we understand you may want to request a cancellation of your visa application and a credit for the amount paid. However, we will only approve the refund/credit if it follows our Refund policy guideline:

  • If your application has not been reviewed by our team, nor submitted to the government for approval, then you will receive a credit for the full amount of the iVisa processing fee and government fee(visa cost).
  • If your application has been reviewed by our team but has not yet been submitted to the government for approval, you will receive a credit for the full amount of the government fee (visa cost).
  • If your application has been submitted to the government for approval or a visa is already issued, unfortunately, no credit is available.

Our policy also applies to these circumstances:

  • If we make a mistake on your application, a 100% refund of the iVisa processing fee will be issued and we will process your visa again at no cost.
  • If you purchase rush or super rush processing additional fee and we do not deliver the travel document within the agreed timeframe, you will receive a credit for the iVisa rush or super rush processing fee.
  • If you miss your trip because iVisa does not deliver the travel document within the agreed timeframe, you will receive a full cash refund for the government fee and iVisa processing fee.
    • The exception to the clause above is if the government is the cause of the delay or your arrival date was sooner than our super rush processing time. In such case, you will receive a credit for the iVisa processing fee.
