Updated on Dec 19, 2023

There will be a new travel authorization for select citizens who want to travel to Schengen and European Union states in 2022. The European Commission will be introducing it and the pilot test is set to be in the late 2022, with the full launch expected to be in 2023. The system will be developed like the US ESTA and it will be made available for citizens of countries who are enjoying visa-free travel even if they are not members of the Schengen Agreement or the European Union.

Fill me in

Considering the significant security breaches and terroristic activities in the last decade or so, it is understandable that the EU would need to strengthen its border management and security policies. And one of the things that came up is vetting and tracking travelers that come and go from Schengen and EU states.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ETIAS?

The ETIAS is the system that will take over much of the security tasks when it comes to travelers from visa-exempt countries that aren’t members of the EU or the Schengen Agreement. The acronym corresponds to European Travel Information and Authorization System. The system will run identity and security checks on all travelers that need an ETIAS to enter Schengen and EU countries.

The ETIAS will make it easy to enhance the security protocols within the borders of the member countries. ETIAS-eligible travelers will submit to strict security checks before they are issued the authorization. But you will need to apply for an eVisa if you are not eligible for the ETIAS.

Who needs an ETIAS to travel to the EU?

The ETIAS will guarantee easier entry for citizens of visa-exempt, non-Schengen, non-EU countries to any Schengen state that they want. The system will also make their visits safer and more enjoyable, but they will have to submit to the ETIAS security checks and policies.

At the moment, there are 62 countries in the list of visa-exempt states that are not in the EU or Schengen Area. This includes Antigua and Barbuda, and this is the reason why the Estonia ETIAS for Citizens of Antigua and Barbuda is essential when the system goes online. Citizens of other countries will have to apply for an eVisa with iVisa.com.

How can I apply for the ETIAS?

The ETIAS authorization will only be available online, like most modern travel documents and authorizations. Applicants won’t need to drive to embassies and missions to apply for the document. They can apply for one without going out of their homes, which is very convenient.

How much will it cost?

The authorization will not be as expensive as one might think. An application will only set you back 7.00 if you are between 18 and 70 years old. If you are over 70 years old or below 18, you will not be charged for the application. You may be charged for a Visa application if you are not allowed to apply for the ETIAS.

How long will the authorization be valid for?

The ETIAS authorization can be used to stay in any Schengen or EU state for a maximum of 90 days in a 180-day interval. And the holder can use it for three years from the date of approval or until the passport used in the application expires. However, you can use just one approved ETIAS authorization to enter any ETIAS member state within the duration of the document’s validity.
