Ghana Visa: Types and Policy

The visa requirements for visiting Ghana can depend on the visit's purpose, the citizen's nationality, and the trip's duration.

Most countries in Africa and a few Caribbean territories don’t need a visa to enter Ghana. Citizens of some of these countries can enter Ghana with a visa on arrival as well.

Depending on the foreign nationals' citizenship, the trip duration of visitors from visa-exempt countries ranges from 60 to 90 Days.

Ghana Tourist Visa

Citizens from several countries must apply for a visa to enter Ghana for tourism. This visa can be an Embassy Visa or a Visa on Arrival.

Passport holders from around thirty African countries can travel to Ghana by applying for a Visa on Arrival. This visa can be obtained by applying for it at the immigration checkpoint. This visa can be granted for a short duration.

To obtain a Visa on arrival, the applicants must wait in long queues to receive a form that must be submitted at the border checkpoint.

Foreign nationals of around 190 countries must apply for a Visa to visit Ghana. This visa can be obtained by visiting the nearest Ghanaian Embassy and submitting an application form with supporting documents stating the purpose of the visit.

Ghana e-Visa

The Ghana government will soon start a new visa procedure that can be obtained online.

An e-Visa can expedite the visa process and skip a visit to the Embassy to get the visa. The Ghana e-Visa will be available for tourism, business, or transit purposes. The government is yet to decide the length of stay and the number of entries permitted for an e-visa. The list of countries that can utilize this visa still needs to be determined.

Ghana Visa on Arrival

Citizens from around 30 nationalities can apply for a Visa on Arrival to enter Ghana for tourism purposes. These thirty countries are located in the African territory.

With this travel authorization, citizens can stay in the country for a maximum duration of 30 Days for tourism or business purposes. These citizens must apply for an Embassy Visa to stay longer in Ghana.

Ghana Embassy Visa

According to the Ghana Visa Policy, passport holders of around one hundred and ninety countries must apply for an Embassy Visa to visit Ghana and stay there for different purposes.

As this visa takes much longer to process, applying for it in advance is advisable. To obtain an Embassy Visa, the applicants must book an appointment at the nearest Embassy and submit an application form with supporting documents.

Depending on the requirements of the applicants and the purpose of the visit, the validity of the visa can be decided.

Other Visa Information for Ghana

Citizens of around twenty nationalities can enter Ghana without travel authorization or a visa for short trips. These citizens must present a valid passport at the port of entry to gain entry in Ghana. They can visit Ghana without a visa for business or tourism purposes. Depending on the citizenship of the visitors, they can stay in the country for 60 to 90 Days.
