A must-see attraction in Iceland, the stunning white church of Hallgrimskirkja was designed by Guðjón Samúelsson in 1937. This is a church that can be seen from anywhere in the capital. It’s surprising that its design was hugely inspired by the volcanic basalt pillars that are spread all throughout the countryside of Iceland.

With his back to the church, the statue of Leifur Eiriksson, regarded as the Discoverer of America, standing atop of the hill, takes guard. You can sink in some great views of Iceland from here, but it’s preferable to take the lift from the main door of the church. You will be whisked to the viewing platform, letting yourself reward yourself with panoramic views over the rooftops of the capital and further beyond.

You could join the evening tour which will take you around the entire city of Reykjavik and its surroundings. You will get to discover plenty of folklore and Icelandic history.

The best visit time to visit this is from mid-June to mid-August. The reason being, there is a roster of activities in the church, organ recitals on the 5000-pipe organ, choir concerts, and Sunday services. Some of these activities are chargeable, so make sure to book them online beforehand.
