Important Instructions
An old misnomer that stuck, Iceland is only about 10% covered in glacial ice leaving the rest of the nation to be filled with forested and even mountainous scenery. If you like remote locations where you can get in touch with nature, Iceland is the place to be. If you are feeling adventurous, you can hike to view some of the country's geysers and waterfalls - or even a glacial lagoon. Don't worry about the temperature, since it rarely drops below 0 degrees Celsius.
Before you pack your bags, know that a trip to Iceland may require a visa. Iceland is in the Schengen Agreement, which means that you don't obtain an 'Iceland visa' but rather will need a 'Schengen visa'. You only need a national ID card in two cases: if you are part of the EU/EEA you can travel freely, and nationalities included in the visa waiver program can stay in Iceland for up to 90 days in a 180-day period. Everyone else needs a Schengen visa.
To find out if you need a visa from your non-EU/EEA country of origin, you'll need to look at the 'Annex II' list of the Schengen’s visa policy. However, we suggest you use our Visa Checker Tool. In just seconds you'll know if you need a visa. All you must do is choose your country of origin from the drag-down menu and put Iceland as your destination. If you do not need a visa, Bon Voyage! But if you do, we provide a list of embassies you can use to apply.
Schengen visas cannot be obtained online, which is why iVisa unfortunately does not process applications. Even so, we like to help travelers, which is why we offer a free 24/7 our support service to answer all your visa questions.
Note that a Schengen visa does not necessarily need to come from a diplomatic mission of Iceland, unless you plan to go only to Iceland. However, if you travel to several destinations in the Schengen area, you need to apply for your Schengen visa at the embassy of the country that is your primary destination. If that cannot be determined, you need to submit your application for your visa at the embassy of the country you visit first. So, if you plan to go to Germany and then to Iceland, the visa that you get from the German embassy grants you entry in Iceland as well. Simple, right?
Even though we cannot be of further assistance, we hope you find the above information helpful.
