What is the India Medical e-Visa?

It was implemented to simplify and expedite the process for those seeking medical care in India's renowned healthcare facilities.

Visa-exempt: Who doesn't need to apply for the India Medical e-Visa?

There are a few specific cases where individuals are exempt from applying for the India Medical e-Visa:

  • Nationals of Bhutan and Nepal: They don't require visas or passports to enter and stay in India, with no limit on the duration of their stay. However, they shouldn't transit through mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau, or Pakistan​​ before entering India.

  • Overseas Citizens of India and Persons of Indian Origin Cardholders: These individuals are exempt from visa requirements. They can live and work in India without any time limit. This policy, however, doesn't apply to Bangladeshi and Pakistani ​​nationals.

  • Nationals of the Maldives: Since March 1979, Maldivian nationals have been able to enter India without a visa for up to 90 days​​.

For those not covered by these exemptions, the India Medical e-Visa is necessary for medical-related travel to India.

Do minors have to apply for the India Medical e-Visa?

Yes, minors must apply for the India Medical e-Visa if they travel to India for medical purposes. The application process for children is similar to that for adults, but it requires additional documentation:

  • The minor's birth certificate or any government-issued document that establishes the relationship between the child and the parents/guardians.

  • Consent letter: A signed consent form from parents or legal guardians is necessary.

  • Copies of the parents' or legal guardians' passports or ID cards must be provided.

Legal guardians or parents need to ensure that all required documents are correctly submitted to avoid delays in visa processing.

India Medical e-Visa validity: How long is the India Medical e-Visa valid?

The India Medical e-Visa has specific terms regarding its validity and use:

  • Triple entry: The e-Visa permits triple entry into India.

  • Validity period: The visa is valid for 60 days after arrival. The holder can enter the country on any date within this validity period.

  • Stay duration: The maximum duration of stay is 60 days in Total.

  • Passport validity: Applicants must have a passport valid for at least six months from the date of arrival in India, with at least two blank pages.

  • Arrival with applied passport: Applicants must arrive using the same passport they used when applying for the Medical e-Visa.

  • Designated entry points: Entry is permitted only through 29 designated airports and five designated seaports. However, travelers can depart from any authorized Immigration Check Posts (ICPs) in India.

Can I extend my India Medical e-Visa?

The India Medical e-Visa is non-extendable. Once issued, the validity and terms of the e-visa are fixed and cannot be extended under normal circumstances.

Therefore, it's essential to plan the duration of your medical treatment and stay in India accordingly within the stipulated 60-day period after arrival. A new application for an e-visa will be required for any further stay or additional entries.

To apply for the India Medical e-Visa, applicants need to provide several documents as part of the application process:

  • Passport copy: A copy of the passport with a validity of at least six months from the date of arrival in India.

  • Recent passport photo: A recent passport-sized photograph is required.

  • Medical letter: A letter from the Indian hospital where the applicant will receive treatment.

  • Yellow fever vaccination card: This is necessary if the applicant comes from a country at risk of yellow fever.

  • Return ticket: Proof of a return ticket to the home country or an onward ticket to another country.

  • Proof of sufficient funds: Evidence showing enough funds to cover the stay in India.

  • Email address: To receive confirmation of the e-Visa application.

How to apply for the India Medical e-Visa

To apply for the Indian Medical eVisa, you must complete this 3-step online process:

  • Step 1: Fill out the online request form and choose your preferred processing time.

  • Step 2: Review the information, correct mistakes, and pay the fees with a debit or credit card.

  • Step 3: Upload the documents required and click 'Submit' once you're ready to apply. All travel documents will be sent by email. We advise you to print and save your documents on your digital device.

Do I need the India Medical e-Visa to transit through the country?

No. If you're traveling through India and your purpose is not medical treatment, you don't require the India Medical e-Visa. The India Medical e-Visa is specifically for foreign nationals seeking medical treatment in India.

India entry requirements or restrictions

Travelers entering India should note the following requirements:

  • Passports must be valid for six months beyond the visa application date with at least two blank pages.

  • A visa is required for most travelers.

  • Yellow fever vaccination is mandatory if arriving from affected areas. Other vaccinations are suggested.

  • Currency exceeding USD 5,000 must be declared. Satellite phones are prohibited.

  • COVID-19 testing isn't mandatory for most travelers, but random testing is conducted on 2% of international arrivals. Complete COVID-19 vaccination is recommended.

Differences between the India Medical e-Visa and the India Tourist e-Visa

The India Medical e-Visa and the India Tourist e-Visa serve different purposes:

  • India Medical e-Visa: For foreign nationals seeking medical treatment in India. It allows for a stay of up to 60 days and is a triple-entry visa.

  • India Tourist e-Visa: Intended for travelers visiting India for tourism, casual visits to meet friends or relatives, short-duration medical treatment, or casual business visits. This visa usually has different validity periods, including short-term (30 days) and long-term options (1 year or five years), with varying entry privileges.

However, travelers can exit from any of the authorized Immigration Check Posts (ICPs) in India.

  • The Indian Medical e-Visa is non-extendable.
