In November 2014, the Government of India introduced an online tourist Visa (e-Visa) for 43 countries. This was done to promote travel to India, reducing time spent at border control and eliminating the necessity of visiting the embassy. The following year, India rolled out its e-Visa program for other major world countries. In April 2017, India retooled its e-Visa program, introducing a special visa subcategory for medical travelers.
At present, medical travelers from more than 160 countries can apply for a Medical e-Visa. Travelers who use the Medical e-Visa program apply, pay a fee online, and receive their electronic visa online all before traveling to India. Unlike the Tourist and Business e-Visas, medical travelers can enter the country up to Triple Entry with the e-Visa. The process has really simplified things for medical travelers who are seeking vital treatment in India.
The e-Visa is an official document permitting entry into and travel within India. Applicants will receive their medical visas via email after filling out the application form with the necessary information, and once the online payment is completed/verified.

India may still be a developing country, but it got some things right. Of course, there are some sectors within the state’s institutions that are very well managed, but improvements are needed in others. In the meantime, you would probably like to know that India is a country known for medical tourism. It may be hard to believe for some of you, but India’s medical tourism is a multi-billion dollar industry. The numbers show that people outside of India will spend up to 7 billion dollars by the year 2020. The reason why India is chosen as a destination for medical care is the costs, of course. As you can imagine, the cost of healthcare is way cheaper there than in the United States, for example. Plus, your chances of getting the same quality of services are pretty high. So, as a result, instead of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in the US for a particular medical procedure, people go to India and end up spending just a few tens of thousands. That is a pretty significant difference, don’t you think? Even if India is a developing country, you should probably know that they have the latest medical technology in some of their hospitals. As you can imagine, technology is not the only thing that matters, and human resources are just as important. Even so, the doctors in hospitals known for medical tourism are often educated and trained in Western countries such as the UK and the US. Basically, you get the same treatment but at a much lower cost. At least in some cases, that is. As far as cost is concerned, just to get a clear picture, the cost of medical treatment is about ten times lower in India than the US or UK. Some people go there for alternative medicine, but you can also use India’s healthcare for hip replacement, cardiac bypass, eye surgery, and bone-marrow transplants. Believe it or not, India is one of the best countries when it comes to heart surgeries. So, should you have heart problems that require surgery and you cannot afford treatment in your home country (knock on wood,) going to India to get the care you need is not something that should be overlooked. Medical tourism does work, and thousands of people do it every single year. The first concern people have is the quality of care. After all, we are talking about a developing country and small prices. That can give people the wrong idea that what is cheap lacks quality but this is not always the case. In fact, India has 33 JCI accredited hospitals, and the place you want to go for medical care is Chennai. The city hosts the most visited hospitals. As far as the foreigners are concerned. According to statistics, Chennai has 12,500 hospital beds, and about half of the occupied ones are occupied by foreigners. The hospitals are very well equipped, and the personnel is highly qualified. Before checking yourself into an Indian hospital, one of the most important things is to find the right doctor and the right hospitals. It is a combination that can make the difference between a successful treatment and a lovely stay and one that is not. It may seem a superficial thing to some of you, but in reality, the doctor-hospital combination is crucial. After all, not all hospitals are specialized on certain health issues, and it goes the same for doctors. The point is that the process of finding the right hospital and physician can take more time than you think. Once you do find the combination, there will be a lengthy process that requires a lot of emails back and forth. Not to mention the medical letters and whatnot. One of the things that you do not need to worry yourself with is communication. You would think that it may be an issue since you probably do not speak Hindu. Rest assured that the majority of the medical personnel you will find in hospitals speaks English. Plus, a lot of them studied abroad, in English. The only issue may be the fact that you do not speak English very well, which is highly unlikely since you are reading this article right now. The Government of India noticed the phenomenon of medical tourism in its country, which is why it has simplified the process of foreigners getting into the country for medical purposes. Before the officials came up with the idea of simplification, it was pretty hard to come back for check-ups. There was a long waiting period, and the overall process was tedious. However, that changed, and you can now get whatever document you need in just a couple of days, literally. Plus, the requirements are easy to meet, which is a big plus. The purpose was to focus more on the health and less on bureaucracy. While that does not solve many issues, the effort must be commended. Believe it or not, a lot of people are put off by complicated processed of getting the proper documentation. At the end of the day, the question remains whether or not you would go to India if you had a medical issue that requires expensive treatments. I suppose that the answer would be ‘why not?’ As long as the hospitals in India are well equipped, and the staff is very well trained, it is of little matter where you are getting your treatment. Plus, there is no reason why you should go bankrupt when you get sick when you know that there is someplace else where you can get the same care but at a lower cost. Makes sense, right? People have a lot of misconceptions about India. Yes, it has its issues, just like any other country, but when it comes to health care, you would be surprised. After all, there is a reason why medical tourism increases year by year in India, and it can only be the fact that doctors and facilities there are more than satisfactory. If you can get that at a lower cost, that is even better.
