Is a COVID-19 test needed to enter Japan?

Japan Health Authorities require arriving unvaccinated passengers to present a negative COVID-19 test certificate. The PCR test result must be issued within 3 days of entry to Japan. It's not just a voluntary test, it's a mandatory procedure part of the immigration restrictions and an entry requirement, so any international flight must follow these protocols. Otherwise, the passengers' access to the country will be denied by health authorities.

Test Requirements:

Entering Japan, passengers arriving from authorized countries and nationals abroad will have to follow the COVID-19 test requirements of the Japanese government.

They must present a negative test result.

  • COVID test before arrival: PCR within 72 hours.
  • COVID test exemptions: Children under 6 years old and fully vaccinated travelers with a booster dose.

Do I need a COVID vaccination certificate to travel to Japan?

No, you don't need a COVID vaccination; passports or certificates are not mandatory to enter Japan. However, if you're a fully vaccinated with a booster dose, you won't need to present a pre-arrival covid test.

Approved vaccines are Pfizer, AstraZeneca, Moderna, Janssen, Covaxin, Novavax.
