Birdsland is a village in the Damara region of Lesotho. It is situated on the Gonyane River, approximately 60 km northeast of the capital, Maseru. Chief Robert Moffat founded it in 1835. The village became well-known for its missionary work and strong Christian beliefs. Martin Luther King traveled to Birdsland in 1966 to study how its residents had created their own society with no police or formal governance, yet it remained stable and prosperous. Today, the village has approximately 300 inhabitants.

The Geographic Names Committee of South Africa approved the name change to Meqheleng in November 2001. The decision was revoked later that month after public objections for reasons like historical recognition and respect for Chief Moffat's contribution to Basotho society during its early years.
