Lesotho is a small country in Southern Africa. It is entirely surrounded by South Africa, and one of the most interesting facts about it is that it is the only country in the world that is situated 1000 meters above sea level. If you are trying to find a vacation destination that satisfies your need for adventure, then Lesotho is the country for you. However, before you pack your bags, there are a few things that you should know about Lesotho. After all, you cannot plan your trip without having some information that will help you get around.

First of all, we will cover the entry requirements. After all, a visa may be in order. But you will be pleased to find out that Lesotho’s visa policy is pretty lenient. For one, there are 71 countries whose citizens can enter Lesotho without a visa. Now, the permitted period of stay depends on your nationality. Some nationalities are granted a 90-day stay in Lesotho, while others can stay for no more than 14 days. If you happen to be in this category of travelers, all you need to travel to Lesotho is a valid passport that remains valid for at least another 6 months from your date of arrival.

The leniency of Lesotho’s visa policy goes even further. All nationalities that are not exempt from getting a visa can obtain a Lesotho eVisa. The electronic visa system was adopted in May 2017. So, even if you are not visa exempt, you can easily apply for a visa online. iVisa can provide assistance in that department. As you can imagine, you will need a passport with at least 6 months of validity remaining from your date of arrival. You are also required to get vaccinated against Yellow Fever. Other necessary documents are proof of accommodation, digital photo, and an airline confirmation.

Now that we covered the entry requirements in Lesotho, we will move on to tourism. As mentioned above, Lesotho is a great destination if what you are seeking is adventure. The best time to travel there is May through September. That way, you avoid the rainy season. Nevertheless, keep in mind that Lesotho has 300 days of sunshine, so even if you travel there during the wet season, you may still get lovely weather. Rain does fall, but mostly in storms, and they are not as common as you would think.

One of the things you have to try while in Lesotho is Pony-Trekking. You can do that in Malealea, Semonkong, or at the Basotho Pony-Trekking center. It is of no importance if you are a beginner rider or an experienced one. Just book a tour, and you will have a great time. This is an excellent opportunity to explore Lesotho’s countryside, and see places that you will not be able to see if you are going around in a car. Plus, the Basotho Pony is very strong. It can ride for miles to far-off villages, but people use them to climb up mountains as well.

You also have the option to go hiking in the Highlands. You will most likely need a guide, but they are easy to find and hire. They will take you to an isolated village, and you have to find your way out. But the experience itself is extraordinary. You can spend the night in a remote village. If you are an experienced hiker, you do not need a guide. Just buy a map and enjoy this experience by yourself. Other fun activities include skiing on the slopes of Oxbow during the winter, or you can go trekking and climbing the Maluti/Drakensberg mountains. You can contact GoVertical Mountaineering Adventures to book your experience. The climbs are not the easiest, so if you have never done it before, you should postpone this activity until you are more prepared for it.

If you are looking for something interesting to see, we would recommend the Kome Caves. You will find them an hour-drive from Maseru, which is in the Berea district. The cave houses were built by Basotho people and used as a hiding place from cannibals. They are quite impressive. The Semonkong Falls is also something you may be interested in seeing. Although there is not much you can do there during the winter because the pond below freezes over. However, in the summer, you can admire the 200-meter drop and even swim in the pond below.

Believe it or not, Lesotho is a place where dinosaurs used to roam. You can find some very well-preserved footprints near Moyeni and Morija. Another attraction you can check out is the Katse Dam, which is 185 meters high. It is located in a narrow valley, which comes with impressive sights. You are given the opportunity to capture some of the most amazing pictures there.

The official languages in Lesotho are Sesotho and English. Some people speak Afrikaans as well. However, that is mostly in urban areas. The farther you go from the cities, the more people speak exclusively Sesotho. We recommend that you learn a few basic words in Sesotho. The locals always appreciate a foreigner who tries to speak the same language, and you will be respected for it.

The food in Lesotho is not out of the ordinary. You can find plenty of western food at restaurants in the cities. However, if you want to try out the local cuisine, you can make friends with the locals, and they will cook something for you. The most common dish is called harajja with Golumbi paste. It is spicy, but not mouth-burning spicy. If you like it, you should show your appreciation. It is considered a high praise to compliment someone’s food, especially if you smack your lips.

As far as safety is concerned, Lesotho is definitely safer than its surrounding neighbor, South Africa. You should avoid walking alone at night in Maseru, though. If you have any problems, your best bet is to contact the UK government travel advisory. You should not give money to people who approach you in the street. They may seem friendly, but at some point, you will be asked to provide them with cash. You should not do so. And lastly, at night, people often drive through red lights. The police do not care very much, and it can also be a precaution against carjacking.

The bottom line is that Lesotho makes an excellent vacation destination. There are plenty of sights to see and a lot of new adventures you can embark on. As long as you do your homework, you should be able to enjoy an unforgettable vacation.

All visas grant travelers the permission to travel to a country's port of entry. Whether you are granted entry or not will be at the discretion of the Immigration Officer at the entry point.

We know that our applicants can come across unexpected changes in their travel plans that may prevent them from traveling and therefore getting their visa. This is why we understand you may want to request a cancellation of your visa application and a credit for the amount paid. However, we will only approve the refund/credit if it follows our Refund policy guideline:

  • If your application has not been reviewed by our team, nor submitted to the government for approval, then you will receive a credit for the full amount of the iVisa processing fee and government fee(visa cost).
  • If your application has been reviewed by our team but has not yet been submitted to the government for approval, you will receive a credit for the full amount of the government fee (visa cost).
  • If your application has been submitted to the government for approval or a visa is already issued, unfortunately, no credit is available.

Our policy also applies to these circumstances:

  • If we make a mistake on your application, a 100% refund of the iVisa processing fee will be issued and we will process your visa again at no cost.
  • If you purchase rush or super rush processing additional fee and we do not deliver the travel document within the agreed timeframe, you will receive a credit for the iVisa rush or super rush processing fee.
  • If you miss your trip because iVisa does not deliver the travel document within the agreed timeframe, you will receive a full cash refund for the government fee and iVisa processing fee.
    • The exception to the clause above is if the government is the cause of the delay or your arrival date was sooner than our super rush processing time. In such case, you will receive a credit for the iVisa processing fee.

If for any reason, you are not satisfied with our services, please feel free to contact us. Under reasonable circumstances, we will grant a credit of the iVisa processing fee to be used for a future order.

When the visa has to be shipped to you, the processing times do not include this shipping time. It is from when we receive your application to obtaining the approval. Most visas (e-Visas) are sent via email upon approval so shipping times will not apply.

No, we are not affiliated with any government agencies. We are a private company that specializes in processing travel visas for travelers worldwide.

Unfortunately, we are not able to, since the government agencies do not inform us of the reason(s) behind the decisions.

If your visa is not approved, we advise that you contact the nearest embassy/consulate for more information on what your options are.

We accept Visa, Master Card, American Express, and PayPal.

All citizens from these territories applying through our website will have their application processed with the nationality/citizenship specified in their passport. As an example, a traveler from Puerto Rico will have their request processed as USA nationality. This does not apply to the travelers under the BOTC (British Overseas Territories Citizen) category according to the British Overseas Territories Act of 2002.
