If you are traveling to Moldova, you should include the Orheiul Vechi in your itinerary. The archaeological complex is located 50 kilometers north of Chişinău, this place is known for its history and beautiful nature. One of the points of interest is the Cave Monastery, you will also see ruins from over 2000 years ago and Mongol invasions.

The complex is in the village of Butuceni, a small traditional village, from which there is a trail that you can use to reach the Monastery of the Caves. Another attraction in the area are the twin spires of an orthodox church where the Ascension of St. Mary is venerated, dating from 1905 and recently restored.

During the Soviet regime, the church was closed in 1994 and remained abandoned until it was turned into a tourist attraction. When you are walking around the village you can find two museums to visit, one inside the Orheiul Vechi Exhibition Center and the other is an ethnographic museum in the house N°15 of the village. When you are looking for a place to stay don't hesitate to book a room in the traditional guesthouses.
