People from all over the world travel to Norway to get a look at its famous landscapes, the wild but visually stunning ecosystem in Svalbard Island, the glaciers that top the mountains and creep into the planes, and the Aurora Borealis or the Northern Lights. The country is also blessed with cultural and historic attractions, mainly the Viking culture which started in this country and spread into Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea. Norway (as part of the Schengen Area) is a prime destination for people on vacation because tourists go to countries with fewer restrictions and requirements for entry and in-country travel.

Citizens of Malaysia can visit Norway anytime without getting a Schengen visa. It is one of the countries that are currently exempted from visa requirements until 2021. By the time 2022 rolls around, the ETIAS or the European Travel Information and Authorization System will be launched and this new system will require travelers from Malaysia and other visa-exempt countries to acquire authorization to enter Norway and other Schengen member states.

Frequently Asked Questions

What basic information should I know about ETIAS?

The ETIAS is a system that is made mainly for security purposes and other irregular risks of migration across the Schengen Area. Its design and subsequent construction was approved by the European Commission. The system will be able to vet visitors from Schengen visa-exempt countries. This ensures that the immigration and security protocols will be enhanced and that the only travelers that are allowed to enter the country are those that are low-security risks.

Can I enter any country I want?

The Norway ETIAS for citizens of Malaysia is valid only if you enter Norway first. You cannot initially enter any country besides the one you have applied your ETIAS for. However, you can use the travel authorization to visit all of the countries in the Schengen Zone after visiting Norway.

Is there any limit to my duration of stay in the Schengen Zone?

Yes. The maximum aggregate is 90 days and the total is counted within any period of 180 days. With the Norway ETIAS for citizens of Malaysia, you can enter several countries of the Schengen Zone as many times as you want provided the total number of days that you stay inside the region must not exceed the 90/180 rule.

What is the validity period of each ETIAS authorization?

The maximum validity of the ETIAS is three years if the passport that is linked with it i.e. used in the application has a remaining validity of more than three years. If the passport expires within three years from the date of issue of the ETIAS, the authorization will be invalidated along with it.

What if my passport expires even though the ETIAS still hasn’t reached the expiration date?

Regardless of which of these documents expires first, the ETIAS will be considered void. The Norway ETIAS for citizens of Malaysia is electronically linked to the passport used in the application. If the old passport or ETIAS expires, then you must apply and get a new ETIAS using a new passport. This new ETIAS will be linked to the new passport and you can use it to enter Norway and the other Schengen Area member states anew.

If you are a holder of more than a single passport, you must present the passport associated with your approved travel authorization.
