Learn more about Portugal tourism
Portugal is a famous country in Europe that many people love to visit due to its capital city, Lisbon, as well as the Algarve beaches and wines from Douro, Porto, and Madeira. Besides, its location in the Atlantic Ocean influenced many aspects of its culture, including its gastronomy around codfish and sardines. That is without counting the number of important regions that have impressive castles built more than 4 centuries ago, and also the extensive hills adorned with flowers. This country is undoubtedly an excellent point to visit in Europe.
There are many regions to visit in Popular, but we can say that the most popular are Lisbon, Fátima, Porto, Algarve, and the Portuguese Riviera. Some travelers also visit Northern Portugal to enjoy gorgeous valleys and many parks full of outdoor activities.
Lisbon, the capital city, has a wide variety of attractions for all types of travelers, from the adventure lover to the fan of historical places. You can start your tour at the Belém Tower, the most emblematic medieval defensive tower in the city. In the same historic center of Belém, you can also visit the Jerónimos Monastery of Belém, famous for its Gothic architecture, which gave it its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Lisbon is also famous for the imposing Castle of São Jorge, especially since the human occupation of the castle hill dates back to at least the 8th century BC. If you prefer places to spend a quiet afternoon, you can visit the Plaza del Comercio, which has a large number of shops and cafes. Similarly, Pedro IV Square and the Elevador de Santa Justa cannot be ignored, as they are iconic spots in the city.
Although Lisbon is fascinating, it is not the only place that you can fall in love within Portugal. A great example of this is the Sintra region, where you can locate the colorful Palacio de la Pena. This palace was one of the main residences of the Portuguese royal family during the 19th century and at the same time constitutes one of the maximum expressions of the romantic style of the 19th century in Portugal.
In Sintra, you can also explore the Castelo dos Mouros or Sintra Castle. You can find it in the parish of São Pedro de Penaferrim. This castle stands out for being isolated on one of the peaks of the region, especially because it is built on a huge rocky massif. From its walls, you can enjoy a privileged view of the area to the Atlantic Ocean.
Aside from Sintra, you shouldn’t forget to visit regions like Praia Grande and Azóia, especially because you can go to Cabo Da Roca once you’re there. Cabo da Roca is the westernmost point of continental Portugal and, therefore, of the Iberian Peninsula, continental Europe, and Eurasia. In this place, you can enjoy an incredible view of the Atlantic Ocean and the nature of the region.
Near the Praia Grande region, you can go into Praia da Adraga. This place has a cliff and a whole stretch of turquoise waters ideal for surfers. Keep in mind that the word “Praia” means beach in Portuguese, that’s why it is quite common to hear it when talking about the Portuguese coastline.
Speaking of beaches, you must enjoy the deep-blue waters in this country, especially in places like Berlengas Archipelago, where you can find small coastal islands located in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean. You might be surprised to learn that this place is considered the first protected area in the world because in 1465 King Alfonso V of Portugal prohibited the practice of any form of hunting in Berlenga Grande.
South of Portugal, you can find the Algarve, a popular place full of beautiful beaches and islands like Barreta Island. This island is often visited by tourists due to its total isolation from other regions of the country. You cannot find transport lines or public ferries to access it, so you can only enter it by sea.
In case you don’t want to enjoy beaches, and you prefer adventures more related to mountains or fields, then keep in mind that Portugal has a great variety of them. An example of this is Mount Pico. This place is the highest point of the volcano of the same name, located on the island of Pico, in the Azores archipelago. In the same region of the Azores, you can visit the Lagoa das Sete Cidades, a lake that rises in a huge crater of the Portuguese archipelago. It is an excellent point to rest and relax with nature.
To visit Portugal, in addition to having a good travel plan about the places to visit, you should also consider some recommendations about travel documents.
Some nationalities need a visa to enter Portugal, although this can almost always be solved with a Schengen Visa. Of the rest, it may be enough to apply for a Portugal Passenger Locator Card, as this document is a recent launch that the Portuguese Government made to have a better entry control of tourists while the coronavirus pandemic remains in force.
The Portugal Passenger Locator Card works electronically, and you can apply for it by completing an online application form. This application form is available on iVisa.com, so you don't have to do a very deep search to complete it.
The Portugal Passenger Locator Card is mandatory to enter Portugal for now. This document must be obtained before your arrival in the country.
