Learn More: Schengen Visa

Portugal is located in the Iberian Peninsula next to Spain. It used to be one of the poorest countries in Europe, but once it became a member of the European Union, the country flourished and has become a desired tourist destination. It has lively cities, delicious food, and colorful landscapes. Portugal has a lot of beaches where you can engage in many activities. Water sports are available, but you will love the bars and restaurants. Portugal is golfing heaven as well. The perfect climate and large investments in the infrastructure brought Portugal a prize for the Best Golf Destination in 2012.

Before you travel to Portugal, you must check to see if you need a visa to enter the country. Portugal is a Schengen state, which means that a Schengen visa is required. That is not the case if you are from a European Union country or an EEA (European Economic Area) state. In that situation, you are entitled to freedom of movement, and thus you can travel within the Union and the Schengen Area with no restrictions. The second exception is applicable if you come from one of the countries that are in the visa waiver program according to Schengen’s visa policy. All you need is a valid passport that does not expire for another 6 months from the date of arrival in the Schengen Area. You can stay for up to 90 days.

If you want to check your visa requirements, you can read the Schengen visa policy and see for yourself. However, we recommend our Visa Checker. Click on the Visa Checker button located in the top right corner of this page, select your nationality from the menu on the left, and choose Portugal in the menu on the right. The result will tell you whether or not you need a Schengen visa. If you do, you will be given a list of the nearest embassies where you can apply.

Since Schengen visas cannot be obtained online, iVisa does not process visa applications. Nevertheless, we would like to help you. Our support service is at your disposal 24/7 and is free of charge.

Keep in mind that a Schengen visa can be obtained at any embassy of a Schengen country, but there are rules in place that tell you to which one you need to go. So, if you wish to visit Portugal alone, there is no dilemma: you must visit the Portuguese embassy. However, if you plan to visit multiple Schengen countries on one trip, you need to go to the embassy of the country that represents your primary destination. In case you do not have one or it cannot be established, you must go to the diplomatic mission of the country you visit first. Do not forget to give the embassy a call to inquire about the visa requirements.

We regret that we cannot help more with the Schengen visa application process, and we hope that the information above helps you a little bit. For further information, feel free to contact us.
