What are the different types of Schengen visas?

The Schengen visa is a short-stay visa compared to other travel documents. It is intended for tourism. Those interested in living, studying, or working in a country of the Schengen Zone must obtain the corresponding permits from the authorities of that country.

When applying for a visa of this type, you should know that there are different types, depending on your travel needs. Here are some examples:

  • Type A visas - Airport transit visas allow the holder to stay in the international area of an airport in the Schengen area without leaving the immigration area.
  • Type C visas - These are short-stay visas, allowing the holder to spend up to 90 days in the entire Schengen area per semester. This is the most popular type of visa.

Type C visas, on the other hand, are subdivided into three types:

  • Single-entry - You may only enter the Schengen area on a single occasion.
  • Double entry - You can only enter the Schengen area twice before the visa expires.
  • Multiple entries - You may enter and leave the Schengen area as often as you wish for a maximum of 90 days without exceeding the limit of 180 days. The total number of days is calculated by adding the duration of each stay in the Zone.

At the same time, some visas have limited territorial validity, but these are not as common. This particular type of visa is processed in specific cases, such as for humanitarian purposes.

In this case, we have two types of visas:

  • Type B visas - Also known as transit visas. They authorize the holder to enter and move within the Schengen area. However, they have been almost completely replaced by Type C visas.
  • Type D visas - Known as long-stay visas, these documents allow the holder to reside, study or work in the Schengen area for over 90 days. A type C long-stay visa may be a single-entry or multiple-entry visa.

Minors also need a Schengen Visa, which the parents must process. In addition, the child needs their birth certificate, a copy of both parents' passports, and a notarized letter signed by the parents or the tutor if the child is traveling alone.

Best time to visit the Schengen area

The Schengen area offers incredible attractions, but when to travel will depend on the activities you want to do. It is said that the best time to travel is in the spring or autumn seasons.

Some exciting destinations are Milan in Italy and Notre Dame in France.

Milan is captivating, just three hours by train from Rome. You can't miss visiting this beautiful city. Among the main tourist attractions are those related to culture and art, including the Milan Cathedral, whose architectural structure stands out for its Gothic style; the famous convent of Santa Maria Delle Grazie, where you can see the mural of The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci.

This destination is also perfect for visiting Europe's center and historical attractions, including museums that exhibit artwork in gold and Murano of the fourteenth century, such as the Poldi Pezzoli Museum or the Pinacoteca de Brera, which shows relevant artistic works from throughout Italy.

Another destination is Notre Dame. This is an ancient cathedral with multiple gargoyles, inspired by the Virgin Mary; Gothic style, generating a unique facade. It is located adjacent to Place Jean-Paul II in Paris. Significant events such as Joan of Arc's beatification and Napoleon Bonaparte's coronation have been commemorated there.

You can visit the cathedral's interior, and you will have the opportunity to reach the upper area after climbing about 400 steps; from there, you will enjoy the incredible view of the surrounding landscape.

The entrance is free, but if you want to visit the towers, you must cancel a ticket, and you can make reservations online, so you don't miss the opportunity.

COVID-19 requirements or restrictions

Depending on the country's policy, each member state grants entry to those recommended by a visa officer. It is, therefore, essential to plan before traveling; travelers should check the entry restrictions of their destination country.

To protect yourself while traveling, it is crucial to be fully vaccinated. Many countries may restrict entry if you are not.

According to Foreign Affairs and the European Medical Association, Comirnaty, Spikevax, Vaxzevria, and Janssen are authorized. Additionally, it has accepted the authorization of travelers with vaccines used in an emergency by the World Health Organization, such as Covishield and Sinopharm.

Please note that most countries use a different system to identify risk areas. As a result, travel restrictions are now graded according to the individual, not by region.
