Do Indian citizens need the Sweden Schengen Visa to visit the country?

Yes, Indian citizens require a Sweden Schengen Visa to travel to Sweden and other countries within the Schengen area. This visa allows them to explore Sweden and freely move across all the other Schengen countries without additional border checks.

Apply for this Swedish Visa if you're entering this country first on your trip or plan to spend most of your time in Sweden.

What is the Sweden Schengen Visa for Indian citizens?

As mentioned above, Indian citizens visiting Sweden and other Schengen countries must get a Sweden Schengen Visa (also known as a Sweden Tourist Visa).

For the Sweden Visa application, Indian citizens can seek assistance from the Swedish embassy or consulate in India, or use our services for a more streamlined process!

This Sweden visa allows you to:

  • Travel to Sweden and the Schengen Area for tourism.

  • Visit family and friends.

  • Make a stopover at an airport in the Schengen Zone.

  • Conduct business activities.

  • Participate in recreational courses or training of 90 days or less.

  • Engage in sports and cultural activities.

  • Conduct scientific research.

  • Visit Sweden for medical reasons.

While this visit visa allows for borderless travel within the Schengen area, it does not allow you to work or stay long-term in any member country. For more information, please contact a Swedish embassy or consulate near you.

Sweden Schengen Visa fee: Cost and processing time of the visa for Indian citizens

We currently offer the following processing option for the Swedish Schengen Visa:

  • Standard processing: Up to 30 days for USD $336.99 excluding the government fee.

This iVisa fee includes full support from the iVisa Experts plus a step-by-step guide to help you fill out the application form and prepare for your visa interview in India.

The Swedish government usually makes a decision on your application between 15 and 45 days after submitting the application. That's why we recommend applying as far in advance as possible. The application window opens 6 months before your departure date.

The government fee of about US$85 must be paid during the visa appointment (half-price for children between the ages of 6 and 12 and free for kids under 6 years old).

How long is the Sweden Schengen Visa valid for Indian citizens?

The validity of a Sweden Schengen Visa for Indian citizens can vary depending on the specific circumstances and purpose of travel.

Generally, the Schengen Visa allows for a maximum stay of 90 days within a 180-day period per entry. This means that Indian citizens can visit Sweden and other Schengen countries for up to 90 days within 180 days of entry.

The duration ranges from a single-entry visa to a Multiple Entry visa allowing multiple entries within the visa's validity period. This is decided by the Swedish authorities based on the travel itinerary and supporting documentation provided.

More about the 90/180 rule for the Schengen Visa

The 90/180 rule means that you can visit the Schengen Area for 90 days within a 180-day period. These days aren't counted continuously, even after you leave the Schengen Area.

On the first day you enter any Schengen member state, your 90 days start. Then, the counter stops on your last day in the Schengen Area.

Example of the 90/180 rule:

  1. You travel to Sweden for 10 days. Your 90-day stay starts on the date of entry.

  2. You then travel from Sweden to Finland for a 10-day cruise.

  3. After your Finnish adventure, you go back to India.

  4. As soon as you leave, the counter stops.

You have now spent 20 days in the Schengen Area out of the 90 days you're allowed to visit. You still have 70 days left.

However, the 180-day period starts when you enter Sweden and ends once you depart. Overstaying the allowed duration can lead to legal consequences and affect future travel to the Schengen area.

Can I extend my Schengen Visa while in Sweden?

No, it's usually not allowed to extend the duration of a Swedish Schengen Visa while you're already in the country.

Extensions are only granted in exceptional cases, such as medical emergencies. To extend your stay, you must leave the Schengen Area and apply for a new visa instead.
