Taiwan is a small island country located south of Japan and north of the Philippines. It is governed by the Republic of China, but in practice, it operates as a separate state. Taiwan is known for its lush forests and steep mountains, but you can also enjoy vibrant city life, especially in the capital city of Taipei. If you plan on taking a trip to Taiwan, it is essential that you know one or two things about it. Below, you will find some information that should be of help.

The first thing on your to-do list when you are planning a trip to Taiwan is to do some research on its visa policy. After all, a visa may be in order. However, you should know that the visa policy of Taiwan allows the citizens of 66 countries and jurisdictions to enter and stay in Taiwan without a visa for a period that varies from 14 to 90 days, depending on nationality. While the rule is that extensions are not possible, the citizens of Canada and the United Kingdom can apply for an extension from 90 to 180 days.

If you find out that you are among the nationalities that are visa exempt, all you need is a valid passport that remains valid for at least another 6 months from your date of arrival. The citizens of Japan and the United States are allowed to hold a passport that is valid only for the duration of stay in Taiwan.

A visa on arrival for Taiwan is also available for the citizens of Turkey. The holders of emergency or temporary passports issued by visa-exempt countries can also apply for a visa on arrival. The visa on arrival is available only at the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. If you arrive at Taipei Songshan Airport, Kaohsiung International Airport, or Taichung Airport, you will be given a temporary entry permit so that you can go to the Bureau of Consular Affairs Headquarters in Taipei where you will be issued a visa.

Taiwan also has an electronic visa system, but it is available only for a handful of nationalities. The eVisa allows you to stay in Taiwan for no more than 30 days, and you are granted a single entry. Since the rules can be quite complicated for some nationalities, further research is necessary on this topic.

Taiwan issues online travel authorization certificates as well, but only for the citizens of India, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Indonesia, and Vietnam. All other nationalities must take a trip to the nearest ROC diplomatic mission and submit a visa application there.

The best time to visit Taiwan is during autumn (October through December). That is when the weather is the most comfortable, and there is not so much rain. Spring can be pleasant, although the rainfall can spoil the fun. Summers are not recommended because the temperatures of a tropical marine climate can often exceed 30 degrees Celsius. That is bound to come with some discomfort.

While there are several languages spoken in Taiwan, Mandarin is considered lingua franca. English is not that common, but children understand it better than their parents because it is taught in schools. In urban areas, you may be able to get around with English, but if you plan on exploring some rural areas, you should learn a few basic phrases in Mandarin. It is a really difficult language, but people will always smile and encourage you when they hear you trying to speak. As to what you can see in Taiwan, do not fall to the common misconception that Taiwan is covered in crowded urban areas. It is true that Taiwan is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, and the west coast consists, indeed, of densely populated areas. However, if you want to explore nature in Taiwan, we recommend that you go to the east coast. Taiwan is also knowns for its steep mountains. There are several trails you can take. Hiking is quite popular, and the views you will come across on your way up are breathtaking.

If you are looking for something exciting to do while in Taiwan, it really depends on the time of year you decide to visit. One thing we can recommend is the Cherry Blossom Season in Yangmingshan. We do not have to tell you how beautiful the cherry trees look when they are in bloom. It is very similar to the festival in Japan. You will go back with some of the most amazing photographs. Not to mention that the entire experience of being there is unforgettable.

Another popular activity for tourists is visiting hot springs. A lot of people want to try them out. Since Taiwan is located between an oceanic trench and a volcanic system, hot springs are everywhere. To be more specific, you can check out the one in Beitou, Wulai, and Yangmingshan. Please note that when you go to a hot spring, you are required to bring along the right kind of swimwear when it is mandatory. You are not allowed to enter the spring if you are wearing loose shorts. They have to be made of an elastic material. If you do not comply, you will be required to buy a swimsuit, and it can cost you as much as the equivalent of $250.

As far as safety is concerned, Taiwan is a safe place to travel to. Even as a woman at night, you have nothing to worry about. However, like any other country in the world, Taiwan has an issue with pick pocketing. Just make sure to keep your valuables safe and on you at all times. If you just want to wander around, you should leave all flashy jewelry at the hotel or in your bag. Apart from that, you should be fine.

Healthwise, there is not much to say. You may want to stay away from tap water because it is not always potable. Also, keep in mind that the cuisine in Taiwan involves some raw red meat and undercooked seafood. The locals are used to it, and any live bacteria does not affect them. However, your foreign stomach may not always agree with this diet. You should ease into it if you really want to try their food.

Needless to say, Taiwan is worthy of having a spot on your bucket list. It is a beautiful country, and it has it all. The urban areas are vibrant and never sleep, while the rural areas will fascinate you with their beauty and amazing landscapes.
