Is there a way to track my passport renewal status?

If you’re anxious and you want to know the status of your passport renewal, know that there are two ways you can check that. You either use the Online Passport Status System, which can be found on the Department of State website, or you give them a call.

Before doing any of that, you have to make sure that you have at hand the following:

  • Your last name – if your name includes suffixes (i.e., Jack Jr., Richard 3rd) or hyphens (Jack-Smith,) you have to use them.
  • Date of birth – format: MM/DD/YYY
  • The last four digits of your social security number

Check online:

1.Access the Online Passport Status System on the Department of State website.

2.You have to read the Department of State’s Privacy and Computer Fraud and Abuse Acts Notices and Disclaimers. A new page will open in your window.

3.Once you read the notices and disclaimers, you have to check the box that says, ‘I have read the Privacy and Computer Fraud and Abuse Acts Notices and Disclaimers,’ and then click on the button that says ‘submit.’

4.Insert all the required information (the three bullet points we listed above.)

When you check the status of your passport application, you have the option of receiving automatic updates. Just provide your email address, and as soon as a change occurs, you will be notified about it via email.

Check by phone:

In case you want to check your passport status by phone, you have to call the National Passport Information Center. A customer representative will answer your call and give you the information you need. You have to provide them with the information we listed above for identification.

The phone number you have to call can be found on the US Department of State website. You’ll be pleased to learn that the customer officers speak English and Spanish, and you can call Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM EST. The service is closed during weekends and federal holidays.

The bottom line is that a passport renewal application does not take long to process. However, that amount of time can be shortened if you opt for an expedited process. Besides, if you want to know the status of your application, you can always check online or by phone.
