Visit the city of Muynak in the desert of the Aral Sea.

You might not believe it when you visit Muynak, but here there was once the largest fishing city in central Asia. It had plenty of clear water with river fish and beautiful beaches. You could only reach Muynak via plane or sea. Now, the water and former glory are gone, all that is left is the desertic seabed.

But don't let that discourage you. Muynak is still a very interesting place to visit. The sea began to dry between 1970 and 1980. By 2014, only 10% remained. Nobody knows exactly why it dried. But when all the water was gone, amazing discoveries were made. Archeologists found medieval settlements of the XII-XVI centuries. They found residential buildings, craft workshops, burials, and household items. It was all flooded with the sea. You can explore these discoveries at the Museum of the Aral Sea.

Another interesting thing to see in this Martian landscape is the Ship Cemetery. As the sea dried up, ships were stranded in the desert. You can explore them in the Ship Cemetery to get a glimpse of this former coastal city.

Finally, spend a few days in a yurt in the city of Muynak to escape from the hustle and bustle of modern life. We assure you, you’ll find peace and quiet under the night sky.
