Irish passports for adults are valid for ten years. To continue traveling abroad after the time expires, you will need to apply to renew your Irish passport. You may also wish to apply to renew your passport when:

  • Your passport is lost, stolen, or damaged
  • You have changed your name

If you apply for a new passport before your current one expires, your new passport will run from the date you apply.

If your passport is damaged, lost or stolen, you need to inform the Irish authorities and apply for a new passport.
Online renewals take around 10 working days to process after you submit your renewal application.

No.

If your current passport is due to expire within the next 12 months, you do not need to send it. The previous one will be cancelled within 6 weeks of receiving your new passport, you can keep this for your records.

If your current passport has more than 12 months of validity at the time of your renewal application, you must send the original passport by post to the Irish authorities, unless this passport has been lost or stolen.
