The UK ETA is designed for travelers visiting the United Kingdom for short stays. With this travel authorization, you can enter the UK for several purposes, including tourism and business.
The ETA is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. You can enter and leave the UK multiple times during this period, as long as each visit stays within the six-month limit.
Gibraltar runs its own border rules, but in practice it follows the UK visa policy for short visits. That means a lot of travelers can enter visa-free for tourism or business, usually for up to six months, as long as they have a valid passport and don’t plan to work without permission.
If your nationality normally needs a visa for the UK, you’ll generally need a Gibraltar visa too, unless you fit one of Gibraltar’s specific exemption categories.
On top of nationality-based visa-free entry, Gibraltar gives extra exemptions to certain travelers who hold UK immigration documents, such as a valid UK multiple-entry visa (issued for at least 6 months), a UK residence permit, Indefinite Leave to Remain. The UK ETA is not required for visa-exempt travelers.
There is also a narrower, special waiver tied to multiple-entry Schengen visas: nationals of a small set of countries (for example, including China, India, Morocco, Mongolia, and Russia) may enter Gibraltar visa-free for up to 21 days if they hold a Schengen multiple-entry visa that remains valid for at least 7 days after they plan to leave Gibraltar.
Applying for a visa on your own can be confusing and time-consuming. iVisa simplifies the process, reduces errors, and gives you peace of mind
No. Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory with its own border controls. For visas, it mostly follows UK policy, but the rules aren’t identical to the UK or Schengen.
It depends on your nationality. If you’re visa-exempt under Gibraltar/UK rules, you can enter without a visa for a short visit. If your nationality normally needs a UK visitor visa, you’ll usually need a Gibraltar visa, unless you qualify for a specific exemption.
Exception: a limited Schengen waiver applies only to nationals of a small, specified group of countries who hold a multiple-entry Schengen visa. They may enter Gibraltar for up to 21 days, as long as the Schengen visa remains valid for at least 7 days after they plan to leave. If your nationality isn’t on that list, a Schengen visa won’t help.
Most visa-free visitors are granted a short stay (commonly up to 6 months, similar to UK visitor rules). If you enter under the Schengen-waiver category, your stay is capped at 21 days. Final length is always at the officer’s discretion.
You must also meet Spain/Schengen entry rules to cross the border. If your passport needs a Schengen visa to enter Spain, you’ll need that for the land crossing even if Gibraltar itself lets you in. Also make sure you can re-enter Spain after visiting Gibraltar.
Once fully in force, many non-EU travelers arriving by air/sea should expect Schengen-type stay-limit checks (like the 90/180 rule). This affects how you’re checked, not who needs a Gibraltar visa.
