Sri Lanka offers visa on arrival for Hong Kong passport holders

Hong Kong SAR passport holders can now obtain a Sri Lanka visa on arrival, making travel to the South Asian island nation significantly easier.

According to the Hong Kong government, travelers who apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before their trip can receive an entry visa for stays of up to 30 days upon landing at Bandaranaike International Airport. The announcement, published on 13 April 2026, follows a notification from the Sri Lankan Embassy in Beijing.

An Immigration Department spokesman highlighted the significance of the change:

"Sri Lanka is along the Belt and Road. Under the Belt and Road Initiative, this visa-on-arrival arrangement will bring greater travel convenience to HKSAR passport holders and strengthen tourism, cultural and economic ties between the two places."

What this means for Hong Kong travelers

With this addition, Sri Lanka becomes the 175th country or territory to grant visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to Hong Kong SAR passport holders. The new arrangement is expected to boost tourism and strengthen cultural and economic ties between the two regions.
