Japan eVisa

✈️ The Japan eVisa is an electronic single-entry travel document that allows you to enter the country for tourism purposes.

🌍 Travelers from 127 nationalities can apply for the Japan eVisa if they are residents of Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Mongolia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, Taiwan, the United Arab Emirates, the UK, or the USA.

🗓️ It’s valid 90 days from issuance, for single or multiple entries, depending on the application. Visitors with the eVisa may stay in the country for up to 90 days.

What documents you’ll need to apply:

🛂 A valid passport with a minimum validity of six months and at least two blank pages for visa stamping
📷 A digital passport-sized photograph with a plain white background
👤 Personal details such as your full name, date of birth, and nationality
📞 Your contact information, such as current address, phone number, and email address
🗺️ Details of your planned itinerary, including your arrival and departure dates, the address of your accommodation in Japan, and any planned activities or destinations
💼 Employment details might be needed per government requirements
💰 Proof of sufficient funds to cover your expenses while in Japan

Japan Business Visa*

For individuals attending meetings, conferences, and other non-remunerative professional activities. No paid or technical services are allowed while in Japan.

Japan Working Holiday Visa*

Allows young people (18-30) from eligible countries to holiday in Japan while engaging in work to support their stay. The primary reason for the visit must be tourism.

Typically valid for 1 year from the date of entry into the country. Some countries are only granted a 6-month visa.

Japan visa policy

Japan’s visa policy is tailored to various travellers according to their nationality, purpose of travel, and intended stay duration. Citizens from approximately 70 countries may enter Japan without a visa for short-term visits of up to 15, 30, or 90 days for tourism or business.

Nationals from countries not eligible for visa exemption must apply for a short-term visa in advance. These include the Japan eVisa and other single-entry non-immigrant visas. The Japan eVisa allows for stays of up to 90 days, typically for tourism or business purposes. In some cases, such as for Chinese nationals, applications must be submitted through designated travel agencies.

Business travelers who hold an APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) with the “JPN” code may enter Japan without a visa and stay for up to 90 days per visit.

Most long-stay visa applicants must first obtain a Certificate of Eligibility from the Immigration Services Agency of Japan before applying at a Japanese embassy or consulate.

What is the Japan eVisa and who can apply?

Japan eVisa is an online system for eligible ordinary passport holders from designated countries to apply for a single-entry short-term stay visa (up to 90 days) for tourism purposes. It replaces a paper visa and is available to applicants entering by international flight or scheduled ferry.

How do I receive and present my Japan eVisa?

After approval, applicants receive a PDF “Visa issuance notice”—this must be shown digitally (e.g., on a smartphone or tablet) at the departure port (airport or seaport). No physical sticker is provided.

Is it necessary to visit a consulate when applying for Japan’s eVisa?

No, the application, payment, and issuance are all handled online. However, the embassy or consulate may request an interview or additional documentation.

Can Japan eVisa holders extend their stay?

No. Japan eVisas are single-entry and do not allow extensions. Travelers requiring more extended stays must apply for a different visa category.

Who is exempt from needing a Japan visa?

Japan grants visa exemption to nationals from 73 countries and regions for short visits. Depending on nationality, the duration of the exemption is 15 days (e.g., Indonesia), 30 days (e.g., Brunei), or 90 days (e.g., EU, UK, Australia, USA). What is the APEC Business Travel Card and who can use it in Japan?

Holders of an APEC Business Travel Card (ABTC) stamped with “JPN” may enter without a visa for business stays up to 90 days per visit, with multiple entries allowed.

Do transit visa rules apply when changing flights in Japan?

Yes. Transit Without Visa (TWOV) allows travelers transiting through Japan within 72 hours to a third country, provided they remain in designated transit areas. Depending on departure location, travelers are issued either a Shore Pass (if departing from the same port) or a Transit Pass (if departing from a different port). A confirmed onward ticket is required.
