Is the Japan Arrival Card mandatory?
The arrival procedures themselves are mandatory, every foreign national completes a disembarkation card and a customs declaration. Filing online is optional (paper forms are accepted at every Japanese airport, and nobody is penalised for using them), but it's faster, and iVisa takes care of the details for you.

Why does iVisa charge a service fee if filing directly is free?
Our service fee is separate from any government cost. Filing directly costs nothing; when you apply with us, you're paying for the guided application, no account to create, expert review of your details, and support in your own language, not the government route itself.
What is the tax-free shopping registration, and how is it different from the rest of the arrival filing?
Immigration entry information and the customs declaration are the two mandatory arrival procedures, and they're delivered together as one QR code. Tax-free shopping registration is a separate, optional step that registers your passport for tax-free shopping while you're in Japan, and it comes as its own separate QR. We prepare all three for you, so nothing gets missed, but they arrive as two codes, not one. One thing to know about the shopping itself: until October 31, 2026 stores apply the tax exemption at the register; from November 1, 2026 Japan switches to a refund model, where you pay the tax at purchase and it's refunded after Customs confirms you're taking the goods out of the country.
How early should I complete it?
Any time before your trip. We recommend applying a few days ahead, but there's no narrow window, you can prepare well in advance.
What happens if I arrive without it?
Nothing serious. Paper forms are available on the aircraft and at the airport, and nobody is fined or denied entry for using them. Filing with us in advance just makes arrival faster.
Can I apply for my whole family or group in one application?
Yes. Add everyone travelling with you to a single application, and we prepare a separate QR code for each person, exactly what Japanese immigration requires. It's an easy detail to miss when filing directly, since it's simple to assume one QR covers your whole party.
Do children need their own arrival card?
Every foreign national, children included, completes the arrival procedures and needs their own QR code. A parent or guardian handles the details for children travelling with them, as part of the same family application.
