You can work in the job, for the employer, and in the location specified on your visa, for up to 3 years.

The Resident Visa gives you the right to live, work, and study in New Zealand indefinitely.
There are several ways to qualify:
Skilled Migrant Category (SMC): For people with qualifications, experience, and a job offer in an area that contributes to New Zealand’s economy. Applicants are ranked using a points-based system.
Family Sponsorship: If you have a partner, child, or parent who is a New Zealand citizen or resident, they may be able to sponsor your residency.
Investor and Entrepreneur Visas: For individuals who want to invest a significant amount in New Zealand’s economy or start a business that benefits the country.

If you’re transiting through New Zealand on your way to another country, you may need a Transit Visa, depending on your nationality. You can’t leave the airport unless you hold a valid Visitor Visa or are eligible for visa-free entry.
If you're from a visa-waiver country, you’ll just need an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority), even for short layovers.
If you're not from a visa-waiver country, and your layover involves changing planes or going landside, you’ll need to apply for a Transit Visa.

New Zealand’s visa policy is shaped by your nationality, travel purpose, and length of stay. It offers a wide range of visa options, from short-term visits to long-term residence pathways.
If you’re a citizen of a visa-waiver country such as the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Japan, or most EU nations, you don’t need to apply for a traditional visa before traveling. Instead, you must apply for a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) online before your trip. This digital travel authorization allows multiple entries over 2 years, with each stay limited to 90 days.
Travelers not eligible for the NZeTA must apply for a Visitor Visa. This visa is generally valid for stays of up to 9 months in an 18-month period. You may be eligible for an extension if you meet specific health, financial, and travel history requirements. Reasons for visiting can include tourism, family visits, or short business engagements.
For those planning to stay longer or move to New Zealand, there are other visa categories. A student visa is required for full-time education in New Zealand and often includes work rights during the study period. Work visas are available for people with a job offer or qualifications in high-demand industries like healthcare, construction, and IT. The most common type is the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV).
Resident visas allow individuals to live, work, and study in New Zealand long term. These are often granted under the Skilled Migrant Category, family reunification pathways, or investment-based programs.
New Zealand also offers visas for transit, humanitarian purposes, partners of residents or citizens, and entrepreneurs. Regardless of your visa type, your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from New Zealand, and you may be asked to show proof of onward travel and sufficient funds.
