New Zealander visa policy for Canadian citizens

Canadian citizens do not need a traditional visa to visit New Zealand for short stays. However, all Canada travelers must obtain an approved New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before departure. Travelers must also pay the required International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) as part of the entry process.

iVisa offers one entry document for Canada travelers:

  • New Zealand ETA (NZeTA): A mandatory electronic travel authorization that allows Canada citizens to board a flight to New Zealand for short-term visits. It is not a visa, but it is required for approval of visa-free entry before travel. Canadians are typically granted entry for up to 90 days on arrival.

General New Zealand entry requirements for Canada travelers are:

  • A Canada passport valid for at least three months beyond the intended departure date
  • Approved NZeTA confirmation
  • Payment of the IVL tourism levy
  • Confirmed onward or return travel ticket
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay (if requested)

FAQs

Yes. Canada passport holders must obtain a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) before boarding their flight. The NZeTA is valid for 2 years and allows multiple entries of up to 90 days each.

ETA/eTA decisions are often fast, but exact timelines depend on the destination and whether additional checks are triggered. With iVisa you can get the eTA in as fast as 2 hours.

Canadians can stay up to 3 months per visit with an eTA.

No. The NZeTA only permits stays of up to 90 days per entry. To remain longer, Canadians must apply for a Visitor Visa or another visa category before their NZeTA entry expires.

Even when only transiting through Auckland or another airport, Canada travelers need a NZeTA for transit. Without it, boarding may be denied.

All travelers, including Canadians, must complete the New Zealand Traveler Declaration (NZTD) online before boarding. This form collects health and travel details for border processing.

Yes. Canadians aged 18 to 35 can apply for a Working Holiday Visa, which allows them to live, travel, and work in New Zealand for up to 23 months. This program is popular among young Canada travelers.

Travel insurance is not mandatory for entry, but is highly recommended. It provides protection against high medical costs, trip disruptions, and unexpected emergencies.

Yes. Eligible Canada passport holders aged 12 and over can use eGate kiosks for faster processing at major New Zealand airports. This helps speed up arrival procedures.
