Most Chinese citizens need a New Zealand Visitor Visa before they travel. The NZeTA covers only Australian permanent residents, flights from Australia on an eligible Australian visa, Auckland transit and cruise or cargo ship arrivals. A Visitor Visa allows stays of up to 6 or 9 months, with no work. If you apply from Mainland China, Hong Kong or Macau, Immigration New Zealand also requires the INZ 1027 supplementary form. Before you arrive, complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD), which you can submit up to 24 hours before your travel starts. Transit passengers who stay in the transit area at Auckland International Airport don't need one.

Do Chinese citizens need a visa for New Zealand?
Most do. The Chinese Embassy in New Zealand states that Chinese citizens need a visa to travel there. Immigration New Zealand makes narrow exceptions, such as Auckland transit or arrival by cruise or cargo ship. If you fly in and then board a cruise, you still need a visa.
Can I use an NZeTA instead of a visa if I fly to New Zealand from Australia on a Chinese passport?
Yes, if you fly from Australia on an eligible Australian visa that is valid when you check in. Only transiting through Australia does not count, as the Chinese Embassy in New Zealand also notes. Immigration New Zealand started this route on 3 November 2025 as a 12-month trial, so confirm it is still running before you book. Staying longer than 3 months needs a Visitor Visa.
Do I need the INZ 1027 form or my Hukou for a New Zealand visitor visa?
You need the INZ 1027 supplementary form only if you are in Mainland China, Hong Kong or Macau when you apply. It applies to each applicant aged 17 or older, and Chinese citizens applying from another country are not covered. The Hukou household registration book is optional, as extra proof of identity.
Do Hong Kong or Macau passport holders need a New Zealand visa?
Not for a short visit. Immigration New Zealand lists Hong Kong as visa-waiver for HKSAR and British National (Overseas) passports only, and Macau for Macau Special Administrative Region passports. These travelers need an NZeTA instead. A People’s Republic of China passport follows the visa rules on this page, even for Hong Kong or Macau residents.
