New Zealand visa requirements for German citizens

Germany's Federal Foreign Office says German citizens need no visa for tourist or business stays of up to 3 months. They still need an NZeTA, even for a stay in the transit area, and any work or longer stay needs a visa. Only the Reisepass, the vorläufiger Reisepass (temporary passport) and the Kinderreisepass (children's passport) are accepted; the Personalausweis is not. Immigration New Zealand asks for a passport valid at least 3 months after your planned departure from New Zealand. On arrival, you show your passport, your NZeTA confirmation and a completed New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD).

New Zealand eTA (NZeTA): the travel authority German citizens need to visit New Zealand without a visa, or even to stop in transit.

  • At 77 years of age, my computer skills are rudimentary to say the least. The Visa Customer Support was second to none. Customer Support guided me through a lengthy and for me complicated process until completion. Before starting the Visa process make sure that you have suitable facial photographs to download to the form.

  • They mentioned a levy on tourists so when I was charged extra besides the visa charge I thought it was for the levy instead of faster service which showed other extra charges for fast service.

  • Everything was easy to do online. At one stage I was surprised because I had to bring up some fotos online. Because I had no fotos, I had to stop and do it all again the next day. It would be helpful to give a hint at the beginning of the applicationform.

New Zealand visa FAQs

Quick answers for German citizens traveling to New Zealand.

Still have questions?

Our visa experts are available 24/7 on chat, email, and WhatsApp.

Do German citizens need a visa for New Zealand?

Not for tourist or business stays of up to 3 months, says Germany's Federal Foreign Office. You still need an NZeTA, which it says is also required for a stay in the transit area. Any work, or a longer stay, needs a visa.

Can I enter New Zealand with my German ID card (Personalausweis)?

No. Germany's Federal Foreign Office lists only the Reisepass, the vorläufiger Reisepass (temporary passport) and the Kinderreisepass (children's passport) as valid for New Zealand. The Personalausweis and the temporary ID card are not accepted. Request your NZeTA on the passport you will carry, because Immigration New Zealand says you must travel on that passport.

My child is flying to New Zealand without me. What do they need?

Germany's Federal Foreign Office says minors under 18 traveling without their legal guardian must carry a travel consent declaration in English. Immigration New Zealand says each dependent child needs their own NZeTA. Germany's Federal Ministry of the Interior adds that children traveling outside the EU generally need their own passport, valid for several years.
