Kenyan visa policy for German citizens

German citizens do not currently need a visa to visit Kenya for short stays of up to 90 days for tourism or business. Kenya transitioned to a completely visa-free regime in 2024, requiring all foreign nationals to obtain a digital entry authorization (ETA) instead of a traditional visa. German travelers need one Kenya entry document: Kenya ETA: A mandatory online travel authorization that must be obtained before starting your journey. It's typically processed within three business days and allows German citizens to enter Kenya for a single stay of up to 90 days. Every traveler, regardless of age, must have an approved ETA to board a flight to Kenya. General Kenya entry requirements for German travelers are: German passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended departure date Confirmed return or onward flight ticket Evidence of sufficient financial funds for the duration of the stay Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or host address) Yellow fever vaccination certificate (mandatory if arriving from a high-risk country) Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation

Frequently asked questions about getting the Kenya visa with a Germany passport

The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) has completely replaced the traditional visa for German citizens as of early 2024. You do not need to apply for a visa at the Kenyan Embassy in Berlin. However, the ETA is not optional; it's a mandatory digital entry permit that must be approved before you board your flight. Without a printed or digital copy of your approved ETA, you'll be denied boarding.

No. Kenya does not offer visas or ETAs on arrival at any point of entry, including Jomo Kenyatta International (NBO) or Mombasa (MBA). All German travelers must apply online at least three days before departure. The airline will check for your authorization during check-in, and you won't be allowed to fly without it.

The standard Kenya ETA is a single-entry authorization. However, there is a regional exception: if you travel from Kenya to a member of the East African Community (EAC)—such as Tanzania, Uganda, or Rwanda—you can re-enter Kenya on the same ETA without applying for a new one, provided you haven't traveled to any country outside the EAC and your authorization is still within its 90-day validity window.

No. Every traveler, including infants and minors, must have their own individual ETA. While parents or guardians can complete the application on behalf of children, each person must be issued their own QR-coded document.

The ETA allows for an initial stay of up to 90 days. Once you enter Kenya, the immigration officer will issue a Visitor’s Pass in your passport. If you wish to stay longer, you can apply for a one-time extension of an additional 90 days via the eCitizen portal or at the Immigration Office in Nairobi (Nyayo House). This allows for a total maximum stay of 180 days as a visitor.
