British visa policy for Polish citizens

Polish citizens do not currently need a visa to visit the UK for short stays of up to six months for tourism, business, or short-term study. However, all travelers from Poland (who do not already hold a UK immigration status) must obtain a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before entering the country.

Polish travelers need one UK entry document:

UK ETA: A mandatory digital travel permission for visa-exempt nationals. It allows Polish citizens to enter the UK for stays of up to six months at a time. It’s valid for two years (or until the passport expires), and is electronically linked to the traveler’s passport.

General UK entry requirements for Polish travelers are:

Polish passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended departure date (national ID cards are only accepted for those with settled/pre-settled status)
Approved UK ETA status
Evidence of a return or onward ticket
Proof of sufficient financial means for the duration of the trip
Details of intended accommodation or host address in the UK
Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation (e.g., business contact details or conference invitation)

Do Polish citizens need a visa for short-term visits to the UK?

No. Polish citizens can visit the UK for up to six months without a visa for tourism, business meetings, or short-term study. However, you must now hold a valid UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before you travel. Your stay is strictly limited to non-work activities; if you intend to stay longer or perform paid work, you must apply for a specific visa in advance.

Is the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) mandatory for all Polish travelers?

Yes. As of February 25, 2026, the ETA is a mandatory requirement for all Polish citizens (including children) who don't already hold a UK immigration status (like settled or pre-settled status). It’s valid for two years, and is electronically linked to your passport. Without an approved ETA, you'll be denied boarding by your airline or ferry operator.

Can I still enter the UK using my Polish national ID card?

No. For the vast majority of Polish travelers, a valid passport is now the only accepted travel document for entry. National ID cards are only accepted if you have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) or hold a family permit. Even then, your ID card must be digitally linked to your UKVI account to be recognized at the border.

Can I work in the UK under the visa-free entry rules?

No. You cannot legally work in the UK during a visa-free visit. This includes paid employment, self-employment, or setting up a business. To work, you must apply for a Skilled Worker Visa, Health and Care Worker Visa, or another relevant work route before arriving. Your employer must be a licensed sponsor, and you'll typically need to meet specific salary and English language requirements.

How do I stay in the UK for longer than six months?

To stay beyond the six-month visitor limit, you must apply for a long-term visa, such as a Student Visa, Family Visa, or Work Visa. These applications must be submitted and approved before you enter the UK. You cannot \"switch\"" from a visitor status to a long-term visa while physically in the UK; you must return to Poland or your country of residence to apply through the official points-based immigration system.
