British visa policy for Norwegian citizens

Norwegian citizens do not currently need a visa to visit the UK for short stays of up to six months for tourism, business, or short-term study. However, all travelers from Norway must obtain a UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before entering the country.

Norwegian travelers need one UK entry document:

  • UK ETA: A mandatory digital travel permission for visa-exempt nationals. It allows Norwegian citizens to enter the UK for stays of up to six months at a time. It’s valid for two years (or until the passport expires), and is electronically linked to the traveler’s passport.

General UK entry requirements for Norwegian travelers are:

  • Norwegian biometric passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended departure date (national ID cards are only accepted for those with settled/pre-settled status)
  • Approved UK ETA status
  • Evidence of a return or onward ticket
  • Proof of sufficient financial means for the duration of the trip
  • Details of intended accommodation or host address in the UK
  • Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation (e.g., business contact details or conference invitation)

Frequently asked questions about getting the United Kingdom visa with a Norway passport

No. Norwegian citizens can visit the UK for up to six months without a visa for tourism, business meetings, or short-term study. However, you’re required to hold a valid UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before you travel. Your stay is strictly for non-work activities; if you intend to perform paid work, you must apply for a specific work visa in advance.

The ETA is a digital permission required for all visa-exempt travelers, including Norwegians. It's valid for two years and allows for multiple entries, provided each stay doesn't exceed six months. You must apply for a new ETA if you get a new passport, as the authorization is electronically linked to your specific document.

No. For the majority of Norwegian citizens, a valid biometric passport is now the only accepted travel document for entry. National ID cards are only accepted if you have settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) or hold a frontier worker permit. Even then, your ID card must be digitally linked to your UKVI account to ensure smooth processing at the border.

No. You cannot legally work in the UK on a visitor status or with an ETA. This includes paid employment, self-employment, or internships. To work, you must be sponsored by a UK employer and obtain a Skilled Worker Visa or a Temporary Work Visa before arriving. Attempting to work without the correct visa can result in deportation and a future ban from entering the UK.

If you plan to stay beyond the six-month visitor limit—for example, to study for a full degree or live with a partner—you must apply for a long-term visa (e.g., Student Visa or Family Visa) through the UK's points-based immigration system. You must submit this application and receive approval before traveling to the UK. You generally cannot switch from a visitor status to a long-term residency status while physically inside the UK.
