Thailand visa requirements for Australian citizens

Since 15 September 2026, Australian passport holders get up to 30 days visa-free in Thailand for tourism. The Tourism Authority of Thailand, citing the Royal Gazette, lists Australia among the 30-day exemption countries. Smartraveller advises having proof of accommodation, enough funds and an onward or return ticket ready at entry. Every entry also needs the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC), filed in the 3 days before arrival.

Thailand visa FAQs

Quick answers for Australian citizens traveling to Thailand.

Still have questions?

Our visa experts are available 24/7 on chat, email, and WhatsApp.

Do Australian citizens need a visa for Thailand?

No, not for a tourist trip of up to 30 days. The Tourism Authority of Thailand, citing the Royal Gazette, lists Australia on the 30-day exemption from 15 September 2026. Smartraveller suggests having proof of accommodation, funds and an onward ticket ready at entry. Residents of Australia without citizenship add a VEVO record to any Thai e-Visa application.

Which Thai mission handles my visa if I live in New South Wales?

The Royal Thai Consulate-General in Sydney handles applications from New South Wales residents. The Royal Thai Embassy in Canberra covers the ACT, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania, South Australia and the Northern Territory. Either way, you apply online and no longer lodge your passport in person.

I live in Australia but I'm not an Australian citizen. What extra document does a Thai e-Visa need?

A VEVO record. The Royal Thai Embassy in Canberra says non-Australian residents must upload their Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) record to show their current location. Check every detail first, because the embassy says a submitted e-Visa application can't be edited.

Can Australians apply for a Thai e-Visa after arriving in Thailand?

No. Smartraveller says you can only apply if you're not in Thailand and are in a country where e-Visa services are available. Sort out any visa you need before you fly.
