Dutch visa policy for Australian citizens

Australian citizens do not currently need a visa to visit the Netherlands for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism or business. However, once the new travel authorization system is operational, Australian travelers will need to obtain an ETIAS authorization before entering the Netherlands or any other Schengen Area country. The system is currently expected to be fully implemented by the end of 2026.

Australians will need one Dutch entry document:

  • ETIAS for the Netherlands: A mandatory online travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers visiting the Schengen Area. Once implemented, it will allow Australian citizens to enter the Netherlands for short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business, or transit.

General Netherlands entry requirements for Australian travelers are:

  • Australia passport valid for at least six months
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or invitation letter)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of the stay
  • Travel insurance covering at least €30,000 in medical and repatriation costs
  • Travel itinerary or purpose of visit
  • Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation

Frequently asked questions about getting the Netherlands visa with a Australia passport

Australian citizens do not need a visa for short stays (up to 90 days) in the Netherlands for tourism or business. However, you must have a passport valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure. While currently visa-free, the ETIAS travel authorization is expected to become a mandatory requirement for Australians starting in late 2026.

The ETIAS system has not launched yet, so official processing times have not been confirmed. Most applications are expected to be processed quickly once the system becomes operational. With iVisa, you can apply for the ETIAS for the Netherlands online and receive expert guidance throughout the process.

Australian nationals can stay in the Netherlands for a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period. This limit is calculated on a rolling basis across the entire Schengen Area. For visits exceeding 90 days, you must apply for a long-stay visa or residence permit. Note that Australia also has a separate bilateral visa waiver agreement with the Netherlands that may allow for longer stays under specific conditions.

Australian citizens do not need a visa to transit through the Netherlands if they remain in the international zone. However, starting in late 2026, you will need ETIAS authorization for any transit. If leaving the airport or changing terminals requires passing border control, the 90-day visa-free rule applies.

Australian nationals can generally only extend their stay for exceptional circumstances, like medical emergencies or flight cancellations. However, Australia has a bilateral visa waiver agreement with the Netherlands. This may allow you to stay an extra 90 days in the Netherlands after your Schengen visa expires.
