Visa types needed for Netherlands

  • Netherlands Schengen Visa
  • ETIAS for the Netherlands (coming soon)*

Netherlands Schengen Visa

Purpose: The Netherlands Schengen Visa is a short-stay visa that allows eligible non-EU nationals to travel to the Netherlands and other Schengen countries for purposes such as tourism, business, visiting family, or transit. When to apply: It’s recommended to apply at least 6 months in advance.

Duration and extensions: Valid for up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism or short visits. You can stay in the entire Schengen Area for a total of 90 days per 180-day period.

Entries: The visa is issued as a single-entry or multiple-entry.

Ports of entry: You must apply for your visa at the embassy/consulate of the country that is your main destination, this is where you will stay the longest or where the main purpose of your trip lies. Once you have a valid Schengen Visa (issued by the Netherlands or any Schengen state), you may enter the Schengen Area through any Schengen country at your first port of entry.

Delivery format: Schengen visas are issued as a uniform visa sticker (vignette) affixed in your passport.

ETIAS for the Netherlands (coming soon)*

Purpose: ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is not a visa. It is a pre-travel authorization that will be required for visa-exempt travelers entering the Netherlands and the Schengen Area. When to apply: It’s recommended to apply at least 3 days in advance.

Duration and extensions ETIAS would likely follow the same approach of the UK ETA and US ESTA, where entrance is granted for 90 days over a multiple-year validity period.

Entries: ETIAS will allow multiple entries.

Ports of entry: ETIAS will be valid at any entry port into the Schengen Area.

Delivery format: ETIAS will be electronically linked to your passport, and you’ll need to reapply if your linked passport expires or changes.

*ETIAS is not yet in force. Once implemented, it will be mandatory for visa-exempt travelers to have an ETIAS to enter the Netherlands.

Netherlands visa policy

The Netherlands follows the Schengen Area visa policy, which regulates short-term entry for non-EU nationals. Travelers from visa-required countries must obtain a Schengen Visa (Type C) before arrival for stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period for tourism, business, family visits, or transit.

Travelers from visa-exempt countries, like the UK, USA, Canada and Australia, will need to apply for ETIAS when the system is implemented.

General Netherlands visa requirements are:

  • Passport valid for at least six months from the date of arrival and at least two blank pages
  • Recent photo
  • Biometric information
  • Valid email address
  • Travel details (such as flight information and accommodation address)
  • Proof of sufficient financial means for the duration of stay
  • Proof of ties to the country of residence
  • Travel medical insurance

FAQs

The Schengen Visa is usually valid for stays of up to 90 days. If you're unsure, feel free to contact our team through WhatsApp or iVisa chat during support hours.

The Netherlands offers several visa types depending on the length and purpose of stay. These include the Schengen Visa (Type C) for short stays, national visas and residence permits for longer stays, airport transit visas, and the upcoming ETIAS travel authorization for visa-exempt travelers.
ETIAS is an upcoming electronic travel authorization that will be required for travelers from visa-free countries entering the Netherlands and the Schengen Area. It is not a visa and will allow short stays of up to 90 days within a 180-day period once implemented.
Working in the Netherlands generally requires a residence permit or long-stay visa approved before arrival. A Schengen Visa does not allow employment.
Yes. A valid Schengen Visa issued by the Netherlands allows travel to all Schengen countries, as long as the stay does not exceed the 90/180-day limit.
Our team works with a legal partner specializing in Schengen Visa applications. They will review your application to ensure its accuracy and completeness. Once the authorities approve it, you’ll receive an email with the next steps.
The 90/180-rule means you can stay in the Schengen Area for up to 90 days total within any rolling 180-day period. The 180-day window is always counted backward from each day you are in the Schengen Area. Example:

  • You enter the Schengen Area on January 1
  • You stay for 30 days and leave on January 30
  • In the previous 180 days, you’ve used 30 days
  • You still have 60 days available

If you return later:

  • You stay another 40 days
  • You’ve now used 70 days in the last 180 days
  • You have 20 days remaining until earlier days drop out of the 180-day window
  • Leaving the Schengen Area does not reset the clock. Only time does
A Netherlands Schengen Visa (Type C) is a visa required for travelers from visa-required countries and must be obtained before travel through official channels. ETIAS is not a visa but an online travel authorization for travelers from visa-exempt countries. Once implemented, it will be applied for online before departure and will allow short stays in the Netherlands and the Schengen Area. ETIAS is faster to obtain but does not permit long-term stays or employment and does not replace a Schengen Visa for travelers who need one.
