South Africa Traveller Declaration requirements

Since 1 July 2026, every person entering or leaving South Africa by air, land, sea or rail must submit a Traveller Declaration to SARS, the South African Revenue Service. It applies to every nationality — children included, each with their own declaration completed by a parent or guardian, and South Africans returning home file it too. The only exemption is for air or sea passengers who transit without leaving the designated transit area.

The declaration is a customs form, not a visa. It records the goods and currency you carry, it grants no right to stay, and it is required separately on entry and on exit — a round trip means at least two filings per traveller. It can only be submitted within 24 hours of departure, measured from the last leg travelling directly to South Africa, and the government form requires a South African street address plus around 39 fields, with no account to save your progress.

Who it's for
Everyone crossing a South African border in either direction, whatever their nationality — children included, each with their own declaration. Air or sea passengers who only transit through South Africa and do not leave the designated transit area are exempt.
When to file
The declaration can only be submitted within 24 hours of departure from the country you are travelling from, and on a journey with stops SARS measures it from departure on the last leg travelling directly to South Africa. The window runs from your departure, not your arrival.
Both directions
Entry and exit each require their own declaration, so a round trip means at least two filings per traveller — eight for a family of four.
Ports of entry
Mandatory at all South African ports of entry since 1 July 2026: airports, land borders, seaports and rail crossings. Self-service terminals are available at the ports that have them, for travellers who arrive without one.
Delivery format
You receive a confirmation to show at the border. SARS states that travellers will not be denied entry or departure solely for not having filed in advance — the real risk is failing to declare goods or currency, which can lead to penalties or forfeiture.

Valid for 30 days

South Africa visa FAQs

Quick answers to the most common questions about the South Africa Traveller Declaration.

Still have questions?

Our visa experts are available 24/7 on chat, email, and WhatsApp.

Is the South Africa Traveller Declaration a visa?

No. It is a customs declaration run by SARS that records the goods and currency you carry. It grants no right to enter or stay — visa rules are separate, and most Western and SADC nationals visit South Africa visa-free for short stays.

Who needs to complete the Traveller Declaration?

Every person entering or leaving South Africa by air, land, sea or rail, whatever their nationality — South Africans included. Children are not exempt: each child needs a declaration completed by a parent or guardian.

Do transit passengers need one?

No. Air or sea travellers who are only transiting through South Africa and do not leave the designated transit area are excluded from the requirement. If you clear immigration to change terminals or leave the airport, the exemption no longer applies.

How early can I file the declaration?

No more than 24 hours before departure from the country you are travelling from, and on a journey with stops, from departure on the last leg travelling directly to South Africa. The window runs from your departure, not your arrival, and the government system will not accept it earlier. Applying through iVisa means your details are ready inside that window.

Will I be denied entry if I have not filed it?

No. SARS states that travellers will not be denied entry or departure solely for not having completed a declaration in advance, and self-service terminals are available at the ports that have them. The genuine risk is different: failing to declare goods or currency, or making a false declaration, can lead to penalties, detention of goods or forfeiture.

Do I need to declare anything if I am carrying nothing special?

Yes — the obligation is to file the declaration itself, and the form has an explicit nil option for travellers with nothing to declare. Filing it is what keeps your border crossing smooth.

How much currency can I carry?

You may carry up to R100,000 in or out of South Africa without prior approval from the South African Reserve Bank; above that it is required. Currency and bearer negotiable instruments such as traveller's cheques, bearer cheques, money orders and bearer bonds are declared once they pass the applicable legal threshold.

Do I file again when I leave South Africa?

Yes. The declaration is required separately on entry and on exit, so every traveller files at least twice per trip. A family of four makes eight filings on a round trip — which is exactly the burden iVisa takes over.

Is the government form free?

Yes, SARS charges nothing for the Traveller Declaration. What you pay iVisa is a service fee for preparing every declaration your trip needs in one conversation, in your language, ready the moment the filing window opens.
