Thailand visa requirements for British citizens

UK citizens don't need a visa for short trips to Thailand. They are currently visa-exempt for stays of up to 60 days for tourism or short-term business, and they may be able to extend once for up to 30 additional days at Thai Immigration (subject to approval). Even though a visa is not required, all UK travelers must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before entering Thailand. This is a mandatory online entry declaration that replaces the paper TM6 form and must be submitted within 3 days before arrival.

Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC): A mandatory online arrival declaration that UK citizens must submit within 3 days before arrival. Travelers must present the TDAC on entry as part of Thailand's immigration requirements.

Do United Kingdom citizens need a visa for Thailand?

No. United Kingdom citizens do not usually need a visa for short tourist visits to Thailand. However, they must complete the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC), a digital customs declaration required of all foreign visitors before arrival.

What is the processing time for a TDAC for United Kingdom citizens?

With iVisa, United Kingdom citizens can get their Thailand Digital Arrival Card as fast as 1 day.

How long can United Kingdom citizens stay in Thailand?

United Kingdom citizens can stay in Thailand visa-free for up to 30 days, depending on entry conditions.

Can I extend my stay in Thailand as a UK citizen?

Yes, UK travelers may apply at a Thai Immigration Office for an extension of up to 30 days beyond the initial stay under the exemption (for example, from ~60 days to ~90). However, approval is not guaranteed and is at the discretion of immigration.

Can I do unpaid work in Thailand as a UK citizen (volunteering of working as a dive instructor)?

Travel under the exemption must be for tourism or short-term visits (e.g., leisure, visiting family/friends). Working, long-term study, volunteering, of doing business/employment is not permitted under this exemption.

What happens if I overstay in Thailand as a UK citizen?

You can be fined THB 500 per day for each day you overstayed your permitted stay. The fine is capped at THB 20,000 (typically reached when you've overstayed for 40+ days). Payment is normally made upon departure from Thailand at the airport or at an immigration office, in cash. However, additional consequences may be imposed: if you overstay by more than 90 days, the situation moves from a simple administrative fine to more serious consequences, including detention, deportation, and a ban on re-entry to Thailand.
