Thai visa policy for German citizens

German citizens don't currently need a visa to visit Thailand for short stays of up to 60 days for tourism or business. This exemption can be extended once for an additional 30 days at a local immigration office. However, all travelers must now complete a mandatory digital registration before entering the country by air, land, or sea.

German travelers need one Thailand entry document:

Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC): A mandatory online arrival form for all foreign nationals entering Thailand. Since May 2025, it has replaced the paper TM6 card and must be submitted within 72 hours before arrival. Travelers receive a QR code that’s required for immigration clearance at all international airports and major land borders.

General UK entry requirements for German travelers are:

  • German passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended departure date
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Proof of sufficient financial means for the duration of the trip
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservation or residential address)
  • Travel itinerary or purpose of visit
  • Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation (e.g., business contact details or conference invitation)

Frequently asked questions about getting the Thailand visa with a Germany passport

No. German citizens are eligible for a 60-day visa exemption for tourism or short-term business visits. You don’t need to apply for a visa at an embassy; you’ll receive an entry stamp at the border. However, you must complete the mandatory Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) online before your flight to receive the required QR code for immigration.

Yes. You can extend your stay once for an additional 30 days at any local Thai Immigration Office (e.g., Bangkok, Phuket, or Samui). The fee is 1,900 THB, and you’ll need to provide your passport, a photo, and proof of your Thai address. This brings your total legal stay to 90 days without needing a formal visa from Germany.

For land border crossings, you’re strictly limited to two visa-free entries per calendar year. For air arrivals, there’s no official hard limit, but immigration officers frequently flag travelers who have more than three entries in a 12-month period, as this may suggest you are "living" in Thailand rather than visiting as a tourist.

Technically, no. The 60-day exemption is for tourism and short-term business engagements (like meetings). If you’re a digital nomad or freelancer planning to work remotely long-term, you should apply for the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV). This is a 5-year multiple-entry visa that allows for 180-day stays per entry and was specifically designed for remote workers.

Overstaying is a serious violation of immigration law. The fine is 500 THB per day, up to a maximum of 20,000 THB. If you overstay for more than 90 days, you’ll be deported and blacklisted from re-entering Thailand for at least one year. Repeated overstays, even short ones, can lead to your future visa applications being denied.
