When to apply: It’s recommended to complete the Online Pre-Arrival Form at least a week in advance.

Duration and extensions Depending on the type selected, you can stay for 15, 30, or 90 days. You can extend a tourist VOA up to a total of 150 days per calendar year at the Department of Immigration offices.

Entries: The visa is issued as a multiple-entry document.

Ports of entry: The Visa on Arrival is available at multiple entry points, including Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM), Kathmandu, and most land border crossings with India and China, provided they are open to the public.

Delivery format: You will receive a visa sticker/stamp physically placed in your passport by the Nepal Department of Immigration officials at the port of entry after presenting your submitted Online Pre-Arrival Form.

Nepal Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA)*

This is for travelers from visa-required countries visiting for tourism, mountaineering, or short-term family visits who apply prior to arrival via a Nepali embassy or consulate. A multiple-entry eTA is valid for 15, 30, or 90 days, depending on the chosen tier. You must obtain this before travel.

*We currently don't offer this ETA.

Nepal Gratis Visa*

This is for specialized travelers including children under 10 (except US citizens), Chinese nationals, and SAARC country citizens visiting for the first time in a calendar year. A multiple-entry visa is valid for up to 30 days for SAARC nationals or 150 days for Chinese nationals. You must apply either online before travel or at an arrival kiosk.

*We currently don't offer this visa.

Nepal Non-Tourist Visa*

This is for foreign nationals relocating to Nepal for long-term purposes such as corporate business investments, academic studies, formal employment, or marriage to a Nepali citizen. The validity ranges from 1 month to 1 year and can be extended upon administrative approval. You must obtain this after entering the country on a tourist visa by applying directly to the Department of Immigration.

FAQs

Whether you need a visa depends on your nationality. Citizens of India can enter Nepal without a visa using a valid passport or voter ID.

Travelers from most other countries, including the US, UK, EU, Australia, Canada, and China, need a visa, which can be obtained on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport or land borders.

Some nationalities must apply in advance through a Nepalese embassy before traveling.

Yes, most travelers can get a visa on arrival for Nepal at the airport in Kathmandu and at designated land border entry points. You can choose between a 15-day, 30-day, or 90-day visa for tourism, trekking, and visiting family, with the option to extend your stay up to 150 days in a calendar year while in Nepal.

You can apply for a pre-approval to avoid long queues at the border, so you'll only have to pay for the visa upon arrival.

A foreign tourist is legally permitted to stay in Nepal for a maximum cumulative limit of 150 days within a single calendar year (January 1 to December 31). Whether you stay for 150 days in one consecutive block or spread it out over multiple entries, your total tally across all tourist visas cannot exceed this 150-day cap.

The online Visa on Arrival is an administrative tracking slip for the Visa on Arrival track. It generates a barcode receipt that you bring to the airport to skip the manual terminal queues, but you still pay and receive your visa at the border. The ETA is a digital visa issued directly by a Nepalese embassy or consulate abroad for travelers who want their visa fully approved before flying. However, holding an ETA does not mean you bypass the border counter; immigration officers must still physically affix a visa sticker into your passport booklet upon arrival.

You must fill out the online pre-registration form within 15 days of your scheduled arrival date in Nepal. The automated portal generates a barcode submission receipt that expires exactly 15 days after it is issued. If you submit it too early, the barcode will register as invalid at the border checkpoint, forcing you to fill out the form all over again on the airport's physical kiosk touchscreens.

Yes, you can extend your Nepal tourist visa while in the country. Tourist visas can be extended for a total stay of up to 150 days in a calendar year. Extensions can be arranged through the Department of Immigration offices in Kathmandu or Pokhara before your current visa expires.

Travel insurance is not mandatory for entry into Nepal, but it is highly recommended, especially if you plan to trek or engage in adventure activities. Many trekking permits require proof of insurance that covers emergency evacuation and medical treatment in Nepal.
