Taiwan removes Cambodia from two entry schemes
Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on July 17, 2026 that Cambodian nationals will lose access to two visa facilitation programs effective August 1, 2026. The change ends easier entry routes that had been open to Cambodian citizens.
The two affected schemes are the Travel Authorization Certificate (TAC) conditional visa-free scheme and the Guanhong group visa project. Both previously allowed Cambodian travelers to enter Taiwan without going through the standard visa process.
Why the programs were withdrawn
Taiwan said Cambodia has not reciprocated its diplomatic goodwill and has echoed Beijing’s positions that undermine Taiwan’s sovereignty. The ministry also raised concerns about Cambodia’s connections to cross-border fraud operations.
The announcement came shortly after Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet’s visit to China from July 15 to 17, where he reaffirmed Cambodia’s One China Policy and described Taiwan as an inalienable part of China.
Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded firmly. “We will not negotiate, as we don’t recognize Taiwan as a state,” the ministry said. “Negotiating is equal to recognizing it.”
What changes for Cambodian travelers
From August 1, 2026, Cambodian nationals must apply through standard consular procedures for a Taiwan visa rather than using either facilitation scheme.
The withdrawal is specific to Cambodia. Travelers from India, Indonesia, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Laos retain access to both programs through December 31, 2027.
