Do British citizens need a visa for New Zealand?
Not for visits of up to 6 months. The UK's FCDO says British citizens can visit New Zealand without a visa for up to 6 months, but do need an NZeTA. Its advice covers people traveling on a full British citizen passport.
Does the 6-month stay apply to BOTC or BN(O) passports?
Immigration New Zealand's UK entry covers British citizens, plus other British passport holders who have the right to reside permanently in the UK. So a British Overseas Territories citizen passport qualifies only with that right. British National (Overseas) passports fall under INZ's Hong Kong entry instead, for Hong Kong residents only. If you're unsure, the UK's FCDO suggests contacting the New Zealand High Commission in the UK.
Can I stay 6 months, leave, and come back for another 6 months?
Not within the same 12 months. Immigration New Zealand limits visa-waiver visitors to 6 months in New Zealand in any 12-month period. Your departure date must also fall within 6 months of your arrival, so one full-length visit uses the whole allowance.
I'm a British dual national. Which passport should I use for my NZeTA?
Immigration New Zealand gives the 6-month stay to people traveling on a UK passport. You must request the NZeTA with the passport you travel on, so use your UK passport if you want the longer stay. The UK's FCDO also reminds British citizens to carry a British passport or certificate of entitlement when returning to the UK.
