Most Indian citizens need a New Zealand Visitor Visa before they travel, because India is not on the visa waiver list. Australian permanent residents and cruise ship passengers can visit with an NZeTA instead. The visa allows stays of up to 6 or 9 months and up to 3 months of study. You can't work for a New Zealand employer or business, but remote work for an overseas employer or client is allowed. Since 1 October 2026, Immigration New Zealand accepts Visitor Visa applications online only, and paper forms only in exceptional circumstances. Documents not in English need a translation by someone who meets Immigration New Zealand’s requirements, not a family member or friend. Before you arrive, complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD), which you can submit up to 24 hours before your travel starts.

Do Indian citizens need a visa for New Zealand?
Most do. India is not on Immigration New Zealand’s visa waiver list, so Indian passport holders need a Visitor Visa before they travel. The exceptions are Australian permanent residents and cruise ship passengers, who can visit with an NZeTA. The New Zealand High Commission in New Delhi lists notarial services, not visa services. Your application goes online to Immigration New Zealand.
Can I still lodge a New Zealand visitor visa at a VFS centre in India?
Not as a standard route. Since 1 October 2026, Immigration New Zealand accepts Visitor Visa applications online only. It takes paper forms only in exceptional circumstances, after you contact it first. Its India checklist from July 2024 still mentions lodging at a Visa Application Centre, but that option no longer applies to this visa.
Which police certificate does New Zealand accept from Indian applicants?
When a police certificate is required, Immigration New Zealand accepts only certificates from a Regional Passport Office of India’s Ministry of External Affairs. This rule took effect on 1 December 2025 for Indian nationals living in India. Requirements for Indian nationals living outside India have not changed.
Do Indian passport holders need a transit visa for Auckland?
Usually, yes. India is not on Immigration New Zealand’s transit visa waiver list, so you need a Transit Visa unless an exception applies. Exceptions include holding a valid New Zealand visa or Australian permanent residence. If you are flying to or from Australia on a current Australian visa, you can transit Auckland with an NZeTA instead.
