New Zealander visa policy for Japanese citizens

Japanese citizens don’t need a visa to visit New Zealand for stays of up to 90 days (tourism, business, visiting family). However, they must have a New Zealand ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) before traveling. In addition, all travelers must fill out the New Zealand Traveller Declaration, a free online government form collecting information about your travel, including customs, immigration, and biosecurity details.

iVisa offers one entry document for the New Zealand for Japanese citizens:

  • New Zealand ETA: A mandatory travel authorisation for visa-exempt travelers. It allows multiple entries over 2 years (or until the passport expires).

General New Zealand ETA requirements for Japanese travelers are:

  • A Japanese passport valid for the duration of the stay
  • Photo
  • Additional documents may be required depending on the purpose of travel

Frequently asked questions about getting the New Zealand visa with a Japan passport

No, Japanese citizens do not need a visa for short stays in New Zealand for tourism purposes. However, they must complete a New Zealand ETA registration before traveling. Additionally, they must complete the online digital traveller declaration, which replaced the paper immigration forms, through the government website.

The New Zealand ETA is usually processed almost immediately after submission, but can take up to 3 days.

Processing times may vary depending on your application details and whether additional checks are required.

Japanese citizens can stay in New Zealand for up to 90 days per visit under the New Zealand ETA rules.

Japanese citizens generally also require an ETA for airport transit in New Zealand, even if they remain in the international transit area and do not pass through immigration.

If they plan to enter New Zealand during transit, they must meet standard entry requirements, including completing the ETA requirements.

No, you can’t extend your maximum stay on a New Zealand ETA as a Japanese citizen.

The International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) is a mandatory fee charged by the New Zealand government to most international visitors, including Japanese citizens, and it is paid when applying for a visa or NZeTA.

It helps fund environmental conservation and tourism infrastructure, ensuring visitors contribute to protecting and maintaining New Zealand.
