Australia Visitor Visa (Subclass 600)

Purpose: It’s for tourism, seeing family, or business for those not eligible for the eVisitor or ETA. It includes streams for sponsored family visits and frequent travelers.

When to apply: Apply 4–6 weeks in advance. Processing times vary significantly based on your nationality and the specific stream.

Duration and extensions: Stays are typically granted for 3, 6, or 12 months. To stay longer, you must apply for a new visa while in Australia before your current one expires.

Entries: It's issued as either a single-entry or multiple-entry visa, depending on your individual grant.

Ports of entry: Valid for entry at all international airports and seaports across Australia.

Delivery format: The visa is digital and linked to your passport. You’ll receive a grant letter via email to carry for your records.

Australia eVisitor Visa (Subclass 651)

Purpose: It’s for travelers visiting for tourism, holidays, family visits, or business activities like meetings and conferences. It doesn't allow paid work.

When to apply: You should apply at least two weeks before your trip. While many are granted within days, complex cases take longer.

Duration and extensions: It allows stays of up to 3 months per visit and is valid for 12 months from the grant date. It's non-extendable; you must apply for a new visa to stay longer.

Entries: This is a multiple-entry visa.

Ports of entry: Holders can enter through any international airport or seaport in Australia.

Delivery format: It’s electronically linked to your passport. You won’t get a sticker, but it’s recommended to keep a digital or printed copy of the grant notification.

Australia Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) (subclass 601)*

A digital authorization for citizens of specific countries (like the U.S., Canada, and Japan) for tourism or business. It allows multiple entries for stays of up to 3 months each over a 12-month period.

Australia Transit Visa (subclass 771)*

For travelers passing through Australia for up to 72 hours. It's for those with a confirmed onward booking to another country.

Student and Training Visas*

These visas are for individuals pursuing education or professional development in Australia. The Student Visa (subclass 500) is for full-time study at recognized institutions, while the Student Guardian Visa (subclass 590) allows a parent or guardian to support a student under 18. The Training Visa (subclass 407) is for workplace-based occupational training or professional development. All require proof of enrollment, health insurance, and sufficient funds (currently AUD 29,710 per year for students).

Work and Skilled Visas*

This category provides pathways for professionals to fill labor shortages. The Skills in Demand Visa (subclass 482) offers three streams—Specialist, Core, and Essential—based on salary and occupation. The Skilled Independent (subclass 189) and Skilled Nominated (subclass 190) are points-tested permanent visas for high-demand workers. The Skilled Work Regional (subclass 491) is a five-year provisional visa for those working in regional areas with a pathway to permanent residency.

Family and Partner Visas*

These visas facilitate the migration of family members of Australian citizens or permanent residents. Partner Visas (subclasses 309/100 and 820/801) use a two-stage process for spouses or de facto partners to move from temporary to permanent status. The Prospective Marriage Visa (subclass 300) is for those engaged to marry an Australian, valid for 9 to 15 months. Child and Parent Visas (various subclasses) allow children or parents to join their families in Australia permanently, subject to annual caps and long processing times.

Working Holiday Visas (subclasses 417 and 462)*

For young adults (18–30 or 35, depending on nationality) to have an extended holiday and work in Australia to fund their trip. Valid for 12 months, with options to extend for a second or third year.

Australia visa policy

Most foreign nationals must obtain a visa or digital authorization before traveling to Australia for tourism, business, study, work, or other purposes. Australia doesn't offer a standard Visa on Arrival (VoA) service; instead, eligible travelers must secure an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or eVisitor visa online before departure. Citizens of New Zealand are the exception and are generally granted a Special Category visa upon arrival.

Travelers entering Australia are required to complete an Incoming Passenger Card (IPC) before or upon arrival to declare their personal details and any restricted goods.

General Australia visa requirements are:

Passport valid for at least six months from the date of arrival and at least one blank page
Recent digital photo (required for certain online subclasses)
Travel details (such as your flight itinerary and accommodation address)
Proof of sufficient financial means for the duration of stay
Additional supporting documents depending on visa type (e.g., a Confirmation of Enrolment for students or a business invitation letter)

Can I apply for an Australian visa more than once a year?

Yes. As long as you meet the eligibility criteria, you can apply for a new visa as often as needed

When should I apply for my Australia visa?

For peace of mind, if you need an ETA or eVisitor Visa, you should apply at least two weeks before your trip.

Travelers who need other visas or may require an embassy visit or health check should apply at least three months in advance.

Can I extend my Australia visa while I’m there?

Not usually. If you need to stay longer, apply for a different visa or request an extension through the Department of Home Affairs before your visa expires.
