Australian visa policy for Swiss citizens

Swiss citizens need a visa to visit Australia for short stays of up to 90 days per visit for tourism or business purposes.

Swiss travelers need one Australia entry document:

  • Australia eVisitor Visa (subclass 651): A mandatory online visa for citizens of eligible European countries, including Switzerland. It allows for multiple entries over a 12-month period, with each stay limited to a maximum of three months. It must be applied for while the traveler is outside of Australia.

General Australia entry requirements for Swiss travelers are:

  • Swiss passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended departure date
  • Confirmed return or onward flight ticket
  • Evidence of sufficient financial funds for the duration of the stay
  • Meet specific health and character requirements (e.g., no criminal convictions totaling 12 months or more)
  • Other supporting documents, depending on purpose/situation

Frequently asked questions about getting the Australia visa with a Switzerland passport

Both allow Swiss citizens to visit for up to three months, but they've different application paths and costs. The eVisitor (651) is applied for through the official website and is free of charge. The ETA (601) is applied for via a mobile app and carries a $20 AUD service fee. Unless you've technical issues with the website, the eVisitor is the standard, no-cost choice for Swiss travelers.

No. Australia does not offer visas on arrival. Every traveler must have a valid visa or travel authorization electronically linked to their passport before boarding their flight. Swiss citizens should apply for their eVisitor (subclass 651) online via the official Home Affairs website before they begin their journey.

No. The eVisitor is strictly for tourism and business visitor activities, such as attending conferences, negotiating contracts, or making general business inquiries. You cannot legally take up employment or provide services to a business or organization based in Australia. For paid employment, you must apply for a specific work-related visa category.

Yes. Since July 2024, Switzerland has been part of the Working Holiday (subclass 417) program. This allows Swiss citizens aged 18 to 35 to live and work in Australia for up to one year. This is a reciprocal arrangement that permits Swiss youth to fund their travel through short-term employment while exploring the country.

Not necessarily. The eVisitor visa is valid for 12 months from the date it's granted and allows for multiple entries. You can enter and leave Australia as many times as you like within that year, provided each individual stay doesn't exceed three months. You only need a new visa once your current 12-month eVisitor period expires or if you get a new passport.
