FAQs

Yes, Indian citizens need a visa to enter the United States for tourism, business, study, work, or other purposes. Most short-term travelers apply for a US B1/B2 Visa, which covers tourism (B2) and business visits (B1). ESTA is not available to Indian passport holders under the Visa Waiver Program.

This depends on the document you're applying for.

  • US B1/B2 Visa:* Processing includes completing the DS-160 form, paying the visa fee, and attending a visa interview at a US embassy or consulate. Appointment wait times vary significantly by location and demand. After the interview, visa issuance typically takes several working days if approved. There is no guaranteed expedited timeline, and applicants should apply well in advance of travel.

The US B1/B2 Visa is commonly issued with long validity (often up to 10 years for Indian citizens), but each stay is generally limited to up to 6 months per entry, as determined by US Customs and Border Protection at the port of entry. The authorized stay is recorded electronically on the I-94 record.

Yes, Indian passport holders typically require a valid US visa even for transit through a US airport, unless they hold another qualifying US visa. Transit without a visa is generally not permitted for Indian citizens.

Extensions may be requested by filing Form I-539 with US Citizenship and Immigration Services before the authorized stay expires. Approval is discretionary, and applicants must demonstrate valid reasons and continued compliance with visa conditions.
