South Africa visa requirements

South Africa does not ask most visitors for a visa, but since 1 July 2026 it asks almost every traveller for something else: the SARS Traveller Declaration, a customs form that is mandatory at all ports of entry — air, land, sea and rail. Filing online is the normal route; SARS still takes a paper declaration when its systems are down, when there is no connectivity at the port, or when a traveller is otherwise reasonably unable to file electronically. It covers the goods and currency you carry, it applies to children as well as adults, and on a round trip it is required twice: once on entry and again on exit. Air and sea passengers who stay inside the designated transit area are the exception, and are exempt.

Start your application and iVisa will confirm exactly which South Africa travel document you need based on your nationality and trip, then prepare, review, and file it for you.

General South Africa Traveller Declaration requirements are:

Requirements verified against official government sources

  • A valid passport
  • Travel details (your flight or border crossing, in both directions)
  • The address where you will stay in South Africa
  • Yellow fever certificate (only if traveling from or transiting through a yellow fever belt country)
  • A valid email address

  • I got South Africa visa, however this was just piece of paper which SA government doesn't accept, so I wasn't allowed to enter country. Wasting my money for fly tickets and accommodation for nothing.

South Africa visa FAQs

What travelers commonly ask about South Africa visas.

Still have questions?

Our visa experts are available 24/7 on chat, email, and WhatsApp.

Do I need a visa for South Africa?

Generally, no. Nationals of the United Kingdom, the United States, most of the EU and the neighbouring SADC countries can visit South Africa visa-free for short stays. What every traveller does need since 1 July 2026 is the SARS Traveller Declaration — an online customs form filed on entry and again on exit.

What is the South Africa Traveller Declaration?

It is an online customs declaration run by SARS, the South African Revenue Service. It records the goods and currency you carry into or out of the country. It is not a visa and grants no right to stay — it is a declaration you submit, with no approval step.

Who has to complete the Traveller Declaration?

Every person entering or leaving South Africa by air, land, sea or rail — including children, whose declarations are completed by a parent or guardian, and including South African citizens and residents. Air or sea passengers who only transit and do not leave the designated transit area are exempt.

When can I file the Traveller Declaration?

No more than 24 hours before departure from the country you are travelling from, and on a journey with stops, from departure on the last leg travelling directly to South Africa. The window is measured from departure, not arrival, and it cannot be filed earlier — applying through iVisa means your details are prepared and ready to file the moment the window opens.

What happens if I arrive without one?

SARS states that travellers will not be denied entry into or departure from South Africa solely because they have not completed a declaration in advance — officials are on hand, and self-service terminals are available at the ports that have them. The real risk is different: failing to declare goods or currency, or declaring falsely, can lead to delays, penalties or the forfeiture of goods.

How much currency can I bring into South Africa?

You may carry up to R100,000 in or out of South Africa without prior approval; above that it is required. Currency and bearer negotiable instruments such as traveller's cheques and money orders are declared once they pass the applicable legal threshold. If you carry less than that and have nothing else to declare, you still file the declaration — the form has an explicit nil option.

Do children need their own Traveller Declaration?

Yes. Children are not exempt — each child needs a declaration completed by a parent or guardian. A family of four therefore files four declarations on entry and four more on exit.
